Minimum Size
• The minimum size of a fillet weld as Material thickness of Minimum Size of
thicker part joined fillet weld, mm
measured should not be less than the values
shown on the right, except that it need not to 12 mm incl. 5
exceed the thickness of the thinner part. over 12 mm to 20 6
over 20 8
When welding attachments to non-load
carrying members the values on the right
need not apply.
• The minimum effective length of a fillet weld should be 40 mm or 4 times the size of
the fillet, whichever is larger.
Maximum Size of Weld
• The maximum fillet weld size, Dmax, recommended by good practice along a sheared
edge is:
Dmax ≤ t when t ≤ 6 mm
Dmax = t – 2 when t > 6 mm

• Material with rolled edges:
t t/4
D

† Effective size = D - t / 4 D £ 0.75 t t

when D = t

• When fillet welds are used in holes or slots, the diameter of the hole or the width of the slot
should not be less than the thickness of the member containing it plus 8 mm.

The effective throat thickness for flare groove welds on solid bars, when
filled flush to the surface of the solid section of the bar is 0.3 R for
Flare Bevel Groove welds and 0.5 R for Flare Vee Groove welds.
