Cosmetology

What is cosmetology? “Licensed cosmetologists provide a variety of personal services

that help clients look and feel their best. These services primarily include the care and treatment

of hair, nails, and skin”(AACS 1). Cosmetologists provide personal care services that include

caring for people's hair, skin, and nails. Beauty professionals employed in the cosmetology

industry include hair stylists, barbers, and estheticians, also called skin care specialists.

Cosmetology is an ever changing  industry that provides personal care services to clients.

Cosmetology was once considered just for women and it was unheard of for men to go to

a salon to get their hair done or even be a cosmetologist. Men went to barbers and women went

to salons and that's how it was. Now in the present day both men and women go to salons and

barber shops without it being stigmatized. Right now is the best time to get into the industry

because going to salons and barber shops are no longer stigmatized for either gender; which is

causing there to be a higher demand in the industry.  “Heavier interest in wellness and anti-aging,

as well as more men seeking out cosmetology services, may be just two reasons that the Bureau

of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects beauty jobs to grow by 8% in the decade between 2018–2028,

which is faster than average” (Cushing 1). As Destinee Cushing from Beauty Schools Directory

said there is predicted to be a big increase in demand for cosmetic services and for

cosmetologists.
With cosmetology being an ever changing industry keeping up with the new trends and

continuing to pursue one's education is vital to this career. Other cosmetologists are always

coming up with new ways to do things and new trends. Having a community where new

information is always available to everyone's disposal can help keep all of the new and old

clients happy. “You never stop learning after you graduate from cosmetology school. Taking

online cosmetology courses keeps you sharp. You can stay up-to-date on new techniques and

styles while fulfilling your state’s requirement for license renewal”(Beauty CE 9). The author of

this quote helps support my statement that continuing to pursue one’s education is vital in the

cosmetology industry by stating exactly that. Staying on top of new trends and techniques makes

sure clients are well accommodated for and that they know they can receive the desired service.

As a cosmetologist knowing that a certain service can be provided with no flaws is rewarding

because that client will leave the salon happy, satisfied and with a smile on their face.

Cosmetologists along with everyone else in the beauty industry have to go to school for

the certain career they work in. This includes barbers, estheticians, hair stylists, and nail

technicians. However they do not all have to go to school for the same amount of time, some

only have to go for a few months while others may have to go for a few years. Others also have

to pass state board and get a license inorder to pursue their career. “You must complete a state-

approved barber or cosmetology program lasting at least nine months to become a hairstylist.

Barbers must also attend a barber training program. A makeup artist usually attends cosmetology

school for several months to a year. Estheticians must complete a two-year training program that

has been approved by the state in which they want to work”(Mckay 3). No matter the person or

the cosmetology career they chose they must have some sort of schooling.
In conclusion the cosmetology industry is an ever changing industry with many different

fields to choose from. Every field has a different level of education required along with a large

range in salary. Keeping up with the latest trends is a necessity to keeping clients happy and

business booming.
