CHAPTER 3

This chapter presents the research design, the instrument, the procedure and statistical tools
used.

I. Research design

In this study, the researchers used explanatory method of research. This method was
concerned to describe “Negative effects of having too much tricycle in Cabanatuan city as
perceived by H.S STUDENTS (WU-P)”. According to Poverty and Environment Program
(PEP) non-experimental research is of explanatory in nature because there is no manipulation or
control of variables.

II. Data Gathering Technique

The primary source of data for this study was the combination of interview and questionnaire
using the tricycle drives of Cabanatuan city as the respondents. The respondents were chosen by
random sampling method. The information gathered from the sources was included and integrated
and also were subjected to statistical process to determine their significance.
The questionnaire checklist was the primary tool used the researchers in gathering data. It was
formulated though data and information collected by reading, interviews and observations. The
questionnaire was made specific and objective, accompanied with the interview so that the
questions were translated to tagalong and the contents were explained to the respondents very well.

III. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers ask for an approval of the research adviser, and then made a letter of
request to the principal of H.S. asking permission to make a study of negative effects of
having too much tricycle in Cabanatuan city. Samples of questionnaire were submitted to
research adviser and principal to be checked and approved before it was printed and
administrated to the tricycle drivers. The researchers also check for the time and schedules
of the H.S. students of WU-P in order to choose the right time for administering the
questionnaire. Interviews regarding the study were done to reinforce the questionnaire the
contents were translated and explained very well in a way where the drivers would surely
understand the following questions.
IV. Sample size

The next step is to determine how many students to survey. We’ve counted the
number of 3rd yr students of WU-P to distribute the questionnaire. 70 questionnaire
will be distributed to () 3rd year students and every section will have 14 questionnaire
to answer.

V. Sampling procedure

Sampling may be defined as measuring a small portion of something and then making
a general statement about the whole thing. It enables the study of a large, heterogeneous
population more economic wise, meaning not too costly, and more realistic and possible to
make. The population to be researched upon is quite small; hence scientific sampling is
implied to each member of the population since the number of population is attainable for
sampling. The proponents decided to use the unstructured random sampling technique
since the population is well in the reach of statistical evaluation.

To justify the point, the use of Slovin’s Formula was utilized in the

Formula of:

Slovin's formula is written as:

n = N / (1 + Ne^2)

n = Number of samples
N = Total population
e = Error tolerance

VI. Statistical tools

Statistics is one way of getting the information’s organized. To have a general view
of the whole scenario of the study, statistical tool is used. This also includes the scaling
system, which is used by the proponents as a technique to monitor the respondent’s
interpretation of facts.
