Portuguese culture
The culture of Portugal is the reflection of a long history and the encounter of all
the people who have settled in this territory that has been changing over the years.
The different influences of the many cultures that have passed through here are
manifested in the cities and towns of Portugal, in the monumental heritage and in
the traditions. Both Romans and Arabs, as well as societies that preceded them,
left traces and a cultural and archaeological legacy that we can see throughout the
Portuguese territory.
On your trip to Portugal, you should stop visiting the cave paintings of the Gruta del
Escoural, the Roman city of Conímbriga, the Roman Villa of Rabaçal (see Ruta del
Portugal Romano), the Temple of Diana in Évora, the reflection of culture Arab in
the architecture of cities like Olhão or Tavira.
Among the influences of other pueblos there are also flamenco, Italian and French.
The voyages of Portuguese discoverers opened a new world in this country that
fed on African, Asian and American culture, making Portuguese culture a unique
culture.
The monumental, patrimonial and scenic wealth forms part of the World Heritage
Site, from which places in Portugal have been classified by UNESCO.
Baroque architecture is another fundamental element of Portuguese culture, it is a
reflection of the time of splendor that lived in Portugal during the reign of King João
(1707-1750), a moment in which he devoted gold and precious stones from Brazil.
Examples of this Baroque architecture in the Tower and the Church of Oporto
Clerics, the Library of the University of Coimbra, the Convent of Mafra, the Palace
of Mateus, in Vila Real, the collection of the Museum of Coaches in Lisbon.
