you want to start, in which each person will play a different manager. As a group, invent
a new product and give it a name; then, prepare to record a video.

their formal equivalents.

4. Read the sentences and decide if they are formal (F) or informal (I).
Discuss why they are formal or informal and how you would write the
opposite
Can you come tomorrow? – Informal, Would you mind coming tomorrow?
I was wondering if you could send it – Formal, Can you send it.
Sorry, I won’t make it to the party. – Informal, I would like to apologize; I won’t make
it to the party
Would you mind sending it again? – Formal, Can you send it again?

Can you give me the information ASAP? – Informal, Would you mind giving me the
information?
What have you been up to? – Informal, what have you been doing?
5. Decide if these rules characterise the formal or informal letter. Match them
to the examples in exercise 3.
1. Use full verb forms. – Formal, Please accepts my apologies.
2. Use contractions. – Formal, I haven’t got any time.
3. You can leave out an obvious subject and auxiliary verb. – Informal, Can
you come tomorrow?
4. Don’t use abbreviations like ASAP or P.S. – Informal, Can you give me
the information ASAP?
5. Use indirect questions. – Formal, Would you mind sending it again?
6. Use phrasal verbs and idioms. – Informal, What have you been up to?
7. Don’t use exclamation marks. – Informal, See you soon!
8. Use ‘have got”. – Formal, I haven’t got any time.
