Module 1: Parts of Speech

A part of speech is a term used in traditional grammar for one of the nine main categories into which
words are classified according to their functions in sentences. Also known as word classes, parts of
speech are the building blocks of grammar.

A. Noun
- A word used to name a person, animal, place, thing, event, and abstract idea.

B. Pronoun
- Replaces a noun or another pronoun.

C. Verb
- A word which describes an action or a state of being.

D. Adjective
- A word that describes the noun.

E. Article
- Used to introduce a noun.

F. Adverb
- A word which usually describes a verb, telling how something is done.

G. Preposition
- Links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence.

H. Conjunction
- Joins two words, phrases, or sentences together.

I. Interjection
- Words which expresses emotion or surprise, and are usually followed by exclamation marks.
