INSIGHT PAPER #1
TITLE
Global Citizenship is the action of being aware and understanding of the wider world. It
is all about encouraging everyone, especially the youth in taking appropriate, necessary actions
to create a better, sustainable, and peaceful world. It is about developing our skills, behavior,
culture, and knowledge to prepare ourselves for the active roles we will partake, and the belief
that we can all make a difference and change for the better. In this time of crisis and discord,
each one of us has a role in improving the state of everyone’s lives.
With lots of disasters bombarding the country, lots of precautionary measures are being
created with different ideas being applied, including Physics. Physics has a role in alleviating
certain structural issues of infrastructures and geological mishaps, developing innovations for
improvement to reduce the risks, hazards, and damages of these disasters. During
earthquakes, buildings with defective structures due to the misapplication of physics, will result
to its destruction. The elevation of roads in order to prevent the accumulation of water that will
results to flooding, the bumps on roads to prevent incidents caused by over speeding, the use of
seatbelts to prevent a person’s upper body in crashing towards the front of the car when car
crash happens, etc.
Diseases are disasters that is hard to contain if left untreated. In this time of COVID-19,
Physics also takes part in preventing its transmission. In a study created by Netz, R. and Eaton
W. (2020), entitled “Physics of virus transmission by speaking droplets,” they studied the
behavior of droplets in the air after it has been released whether it remains suspended in the air
or rapidly fall to the ground due to gravity, after considering the decrease in the size of the
droplets from water evaporation. The results of the study greatly supported the use of mouth
and face coverings to prevent the transmission of the disease as some droplets falls, and some
potentially virus-carrying droplets, remain airborne for minutes.
Climate change is an issue that is continuously affecting our world’s overall status.
Weather and climate are driven by the absorption of solar radiation and the subsequent re-
distribution of that energy through radiative, advective, and hydrological processes (Regmi J.
2014). Through the application of Physics, researchers can come up with ideas pertaining to the
prevention, mitigation, adaptation, geoengineering, and knowledge-based expansion with
regards to climate change management.
Through learning physics, everyone can contribute to the welfare of the society by
addressing the problems in the mechanism of things. A global citizen should be patient, have
the will to learn, and have open-minded thoughts, to learn the knowledge of physics easily and
successfully. Being a global citizen is not a skill to have but rather, a mission to do. Your every
action may affect the situation of those living around you.
