● In kindergarten students will begin to learn about addition and subtraction

as they begin to count different objects. They count objects in sets both
forwards and backwards also including the number 0. It’s helpful for
students to have visual representations so they can physically see what is
being done. Splash Learn is a great free resource that can be utilized and has
many math concepts as well as visuals and games for children to learn from.

● Students then move from counting sets to joining sets which allows them the
opportunity to join numbers together and begin addition. Fish Eyes by Lois
Ehlert is the perfect book to read to children because it discusses concepts
such as counting, addition, and shapes.

● After this students are introduced to five frames. They begin to build an
understanding of five frames by filling up a five frame. This visual lets them
see similarities and differences between numbers.

A fun game children can play to become familiar with five frames is 1.
Choose a numeral card. Put this number of red counters on a five frame. 2.
Add yellow counters to fill the five frame. How ma
● This understanding of five frames leads to children using ten frames and will
help with subtraction. Children can practice making ten using a ten frame by
playing this game. Make Ten on the Ten Frame To see the importance of this

Operations and Algebraic Thinking K.OA

Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction
as taking apart and taking from.
1. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images,
drawings,2 sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations,
expressions, or equations.
2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10,
e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
3. Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g.,
by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or
equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
4. For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the
given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a
drawing or equation.
5. Fluently add and subtract within 5.
