of Surveying
Assignment 1

Instructions:

Historically, surveying instruments have been developed gradually and some of the earlier in-
struments have been rendered obsolete by more advanced ones. Presented below are ten (10)
such instruments. Write/compose a technical paper describing the origins and uses of these
instruments. A minimum of one (1) full page should be dedicated for each instrument on the
list.

Please follow the format as prescribed in our syllabus. Also, if unavoidable, images may be
used so long as they do not exceed a 50 mm × 50 mm in size.

The instruments are:

2. Transit

3. Semicircumferentor

4. Plane Table

5. Dioptra/Dioptre

6. Roman Groma
