AH-15-023 Rev.00
Hydrogen as fuel

Hydrogen is a combustible gas; it can burn, in the presence of oxygen,

leading to thermal energy, with water as the only residue.

H2 + ½ O2 → H2O +
It is, therefore, a clean fuel, that does not emit CO2 when used.

AH-15-023 Rev.00 2
Fuel cells

Fuel cells are the most efficient way to produce electricity from
hydrogen. They are reliable, modular, scalable and clean.
They are to be found in different technologies, and are capable of
operating at different scales and temperatures.

The Hydrogen Economy

The Hydrogen Economy is based on the concept of using this clean and
sustainable fuel as an “energy vector”.

Tomorrow is today

One of the main pillars of the Hydrogen Economy is the widespread use
of this gas as an alternative fuel for road transport.

AH-15-023 Rev.00 5
Hydrogen for the automotive industry

Different countries have already developed a positioning strategy in the

case of hydrogen as an alternative fuel; prominent among them, the
American strategy and the H2Mobility initiatives in Europe.

AH-15-023 Rev.00 6
Power to gas

The use of hydrogen from renewable sources, by means of a

methanation process, to produce a clean, sustainable and local “natural
gas” (methane) gives rise to the “Power to Gas” (P2G) initiatives.

Markets

Therefore, three existing major markets can be defined in the hydrogen

and fuel cell sector, with different strategies, volumes and future
growths.

Abengoa Hidrógeno’s lines

 Abengoa Hidrógeno is a global player in hydrogen and fuel

cell technologies.
 It has proprietary technology and products for both
hydrogen production (reforming and electrolysis) and energy
production (electrical and thermal or polygeneration).
 The combination of the possibility of producing hydrogen
from electrical energy with the use of this gas to produce,
once again, said energy, results in products aimed at large
scale energy storage.
 Lastly, Abengoa Hidrógeno operates in particular niche
markets, by applying said technologies to specific industrial
sectors, such as aerospace or the defense sector, thereby
developing special projects.
