MAGNETIC PROPERTIES

EEE 242 LECTURE

EEE 242-2020
OBJECTIVES
i. Determine the magnetization of some material given its
magnetic susceptibility and the applied magnetic field
strength.
ii. Briefly explain the two sources of magnetic moments in
materials.
iii. Briefly explain the nature and source of (a) diamagnetism, (b)
paramagnetism, and (c) ferromagnetism.
iv. In terms of crystal structure, explain the source of
ferrimagnetism for cubic ferrites.
v. Describe magnetic hysteresis; explain why ferromagnetic and
ferrimagnetic materials experience magnetic hysteresis; and
(c) explain why these materials may become permanent
magnets.
vi.Note the distinctive magnetic characteristics for both soft
and hard magnetic materials.
vii.Describe the phenomenon ofsuperconductivity .
MAGNETISM
• Magnetism —the phenomenon by which
materials exert an attractive or repulsive
force or influence on other.
• Many modern technological devices such
as electrical power generators and
transformers, electric motors, radio,
television, telephones, computers, and
components of sound and video
reproduction systems, rely on magnetism
and magnetic materials.
