Most fiber-reinforced composites achieve better resistance to fatigue, better stiffness, and a better

strength-to-weight ratio, by incorporating strong and stiff but fragile fibers in a softer and more
ductile matrix. The material transmits the force to the fibers, which bear most of the applied force.

Ceramic matrix composites have good properties at elevated temperatures and are lighter than
high temperature metal matrix composites.

Nylon, being a polymer, is produced in a process known as wire drawing, which is pulled through a
mold to produce a wire.

The modulus of elasticity indicates the stiffness of a material: the more rigid a material is, the
higher its modulus of elasticity.

In the same way, and with the current state of technology, it is possible to manufacture composite
materials that have a better modulus of elasticity per unit weight (specific modulus) and better
resistance per unit weight (specific resistance) than many metals.

A higher specific modulus and specific strength of composite materials means that the weight of
the parts to be manufactured can be reduced. This is a factor of great importance in certain
sectors, such as the automotive or aircraft, and in general in all forms of transport, where the
weight reductions of the components result in higher performance and energy savings.
