INTRODUCTION
The South Asian Associa on for Regional Coopera on (SAARC) is an
economic and geopoli cal organisa on of eight countries named as India,
Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan,
are primarily located in South Asia or the Indian subcon nent.
The South Asian Associa on of Regional Coopera on(SAARC) has completed
thirty years following its incep on in 1985. Yet it has only made modest
progress in achieving its regional goals. The reasons for this are many.
Successful regionalism requires a shared faith in collec ve gains and a vision
for long‐term coopera on that has been missing. There has been a visible lack
of trust among some of the principal actors, a preponderance of domes c
poli cal considera on and a strong sensi vity towards sovereignty that has
prevented collec ve ac on and gains from coopera on. SAARC as a result
has not been able to a ain its objec ves as defined in the Charter. However, a
rapidly changing interna onal environment, globalisa on and new security
challenges underline thenecessity for regional coopera on, especially for the
smaller states.
On this limelight we are proposing an Interna onal Seminar on “Emergence
of SAARC Economies ‐ 20 Years perspec ve” to evaluate, analyse
performance and drawing future course of ac on for greater regional
development.
