1. Ten samples of size n=4 have been collected from a process and the dimension of interest
has been measured for each part as shown below:

(a) Determine the values of center, LCL, and UCL for x and R using the first part of eqs.
(36.6) and (36.7) of the textbook.
(b) Recalculate the UCLx and LCLx using the second part of eqs. (36.6) and (36.7) and Table
36.2 of the textbook.
(c) Construct the control charts for x and R and plot the sample data on the charts.
(d) Calculate the process capabilities parameters, Cp and Cpk using the UCLx and
LCLx obtained in part (b).

2. The diameters of a set of holes and shafts to be mated have been measured and the data are
shown below (in cm):

(a) Determine the tolerance of these parts (shafts and holes).


(b) Express the tolerance of these parts using the unilateral notation.
(c) Determine the clearance (or interference) of these two parts.
(d) Determine the hole temperature to be used to ensure all the shafts and holes are assembled
without any interference (the coefficient of linear thermal expansion is 11.7 μm/°C.

3. Surface roughness measurements were taken from the surface of a machined workpiece as
shown in Fig. 1. The measured values are in microns. Answer the following questions using
the information shown in Figure 1.

(a) Calculate the arithmetic average of the roughness.


(b) Calculate the root mean square value.
(c) Draw a surface finish symbol which will show the arithmetic average calculated above with
a cutoff length of 0.8mm when the measurement was taken in the direction normal to the
machining path.
