Media Analysis and Composition

Background Information:

Media Analysis and Composition is a senior level English course. In order to take Media
Analysis and Composition, U. S. Literature/Comp must have been taken and passed. This two-
term course helps students develop media literacy skills, including analysis of various forms of
mass media: novels (fiction and nonfiction), newspapers, magazines, television, Internet, film,
advertising, music, social media, e-mail, cell phones, instant messaging, “fake news,” etc. While
analyzing electronic and print media, students also build composition skills by writing various
essays. Throughout the semester, we will be analyzing “hot topics” in the media. For discussion
purposes, we will employ the “living room discussion model” in an attempt to develop the
important skill/art of civil discourse (polite conversation, i.e. listening to understand NOT
listening to disprove or argue the other person’s point/opinion.) This course is designed to get
you to be more educated consumers of media, not dictate what you should think. Also, to discuss
with/learn from others who don’t share your views and opinions in a calm manner. With this
being said, you must agree to the following terms in order to participate in this class:

● You will follow the guidelines of a “Living Room Conversation.” This means all of the
conversations you have will revolve around fact and research, not opinions.
● This classroom is a safe space. That means we are not attacking one another, using
offensive language, or being disrespectful. No hate speech, slurs, or general ignorance
will be tolerated.
● We will be practicing listening to understand, not listening to respond. As part of this
class, you will learn the difference.
● Everyone’s voices are important and heard. Seeking answers and justice is not a passive
activity
● I reserve the right to amend this contract as I see fit proceeding forward.
● If you do not see something a requirement that should be in this contract, please let me
know.
