Standard Summary

Standard 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values

“Effective educational leaders develop, advocate, and enact a shared mission, vision, and core

values of high-quality education and academic success and well-being of each student.” This

standard was met by participating in the following activities.

 Standard Activity 1.1C: This activity examined vision and mission statements from two

very different counties. The counties that I used were Kanawha County and Clay County.

Kanawha County is a much larger district than Clay and that was reflected in the

differing vision and mission statements.

 Standard Activity 1.2: For this standard, I used the Strategic Plan that I created for Clay

County High School in Education 640. This plan created measurable objectives for

achievement at the school and a thorough plan of how to achieve those objectives.

 Standard Activity 1.3: This activity was completed in Education 620. A survey was

created for staff, students, and guardians in order to examine the climate of Clay County

High School. Once the climate was assessed, recommendations were made to better the

school.

 Standard Activity 1.4D: For this activity, I utilized listening techniques in a student

assistance team meeting. Effective communication and listening techniques can make a

big difference in the success of a meeting with parents and students. Using the listening

techniques, the meeting had a positive outcome.

  Standard Activity 1.5C: This activity examined a current issue facing Clay County High

School. The issue that I chose was the lack of communication revolving around the

Covid-19 pandemic. This issue was discussed with other members of the staff and a

recommendation was reached.

Key Learnings from the Experience

From this experience, I learned that the mission and vision of the school are the

foundation to how to model your school. School achievement and climate should constantly be

monitored so that administration can make positive changes that will increase student learning. I

also learned that issues will always come up, but it is how you listen to your staff and what

changes you make that will matter the most.

Area(s) Needing Further Experience and Improvement

I definitely think that I need to explore further issues that are occurring at the school on a

normal school year. Covid-19 is unknown territory, so of course it is going to have a lot of issues

as the year proceeds. I would like to look at other issues facing the school and come up with

solutions. It would also be beneficial to use more listening techniques in situations outside of just

student assistance meetings.
