The company
Een Gelderland bank; hele
generaties Nederlanders zijn
ermee opgegroeid. Gelder-
land, opgericht in 1935, kent
een rijke historie. Gechar-
meerd van Scandinavisch
design werd al in een heel
vroeg stadium gekozen
voor moderne vormgeving.
Bovendien werd de basis
gelegd voor het idee dat
vandaag de dag nog steeds
wordt aangehangen: duur-
zaamheid en zitcomfort.
Alle meubelen worden door
ervaren vakmensen met
een grote liefde voor het
meubelvak ambachtelijk
in Nederland vervaardigd.
Bij de keuze voor een Gelder-
land meubel gaat u uiteraard
niet over één nacht ijs.

vindt u in Culemborg en
biedt u de gelegenheid de
totale collectie te bekijken
en het zitcomfort persoonlijk

Gelderland werkt traditio-
neel met designers. Hier-
door ontstaan veel verschil-
lende benaderingen van
de kenmerkende ingetogen
en strakke vormgeving. De

A “Gelderland” couch; many
Dutch generations have been
raised “on” a Gelderland
couch. Gelderland, estab-
lished in 1935, has a rich
history. Charmed by Scandi-
navian design, modern and
square design was introduced
at a very early stage in the
history of Gelderland. Moreo-
ver, this was the foundation
for the principle which is still
applicable today, being
durability and comfort.
All furniture is manufactured
by experienced skilled employ-
ees, with a passion for furniture
constructed according to
traditional methods in the
Netherlands. When you decide

In alle Gelderland banken
worden hoogwaardige
materialen gebruikt, waar-

De romp wordt vervaardigd
van massief beukenhout;
u krijgt daarop een garantie
van 20 jaar. De vulling wordt
opgebouwd uit duurzaam
polyether en koudschuim;
elk onderdeel van de vulling
wordt zorgvuldig geselec-
teerd ten behoeve van
optimaal zitcomfort. Om
aan individuele wensen te

aantal modellen uitgevoerd
met in hoogte verstelbare

land hoezensysteem waar-
door reiniging of vervanging

The high-quality materials
used in all products have
always been the determining
factors for living pleasure;

frame is manufactured from
solid beech wood with a
guarantee of 20 years. The
filling is composed of durable
polyether and cold foam
products; each with a care-
fully selected support in order
to ensure optimal sitting
comfort and ease. In order
to further comply with individ-
ual requirements, a number
of models can be manufac-
tured with “legs” adjustable
in height. The extensive
collection of furniture fabrics
and leather are meticulously
selected on appearance,
design and quality level.
All furniture is provided with
the specific Gelderland cover
system, ensuring that clean-
ing and even exchange of the
covers is possible.

Model 5470 werd in 1989

ontworpen door Jan des
Bouvrie en is sindsdien een
eigenwijs en zeer herken-
baar model in de Gelderland
collectie. Drie jaar later kreeg
de fauteuil een vervolg met
model 5770 zoals op deze
pagina gepresenteerd. Wan-
neer is een model een klassie-
ker? Daarover kan van mening
worden verschild. Voor ons
is van belang dat na bijna
20 jaar de fauteuil nog elke
dag opnieuw kan overtuigen.
Niet alleen qua vorm maar
ook qua functie, comfort
en ergonomie. Uiteindelijk
is de enige stem die telt uw

Model 5470 was designed by

Jan des Bouvrie in 1989 and has
been a smart and very recog-
nisable model in the Gelderland
collection. Three years later,
the chair was complimented
by model 5770, illustrated on
this page. How does a model
become a classic? Opinions
can differ. However, what we
experience to be important
is the fact that after 20 years
the chair is still convincing, day
in, day out. This does not only
relate to the design, but also
to the functionality, comfort
and ergonomics. And in the
end, the only vote that is really
of influence, is your vote; as a
loyal user of our models. You
create the design classics.

Oud wordt weer als nieuw
Old becomes new again
Behalve het ontwerp is de
gekozen stoffering belangrijk
voor de uitstraling van een
meubel. De meeste mensen
kiezen een Gelderland meubel
om er lang van te kunnen
genieten. Deze verwachting
wordt al tientallen jaren
waargemaakt. Nog dagelijks
worden bij Gelderland model-
len aangeboden om, na jaren-
lang gebruik, compleet te
worden gerenoveerd. Een
groter compliment voor tijd-
loos design en duurzaamheid
kunnen we ons niet voorstellen.
Na zorgvuldige inspectie
wordt het binnenwerk waar
nodig vervangen. Door het
specifieke Gelderland systeem
van de losse hoes is het altijd
mogelijk een nieuwe bekle-
ding te kiezen. Er is een grote
keuze. Natuurlijk kunt u ook
opnieuw kiezen voor dezelfde
stof en dezelfde kleur. Vanzelf-
sprekend staan we open voor
innovatieve ontwikkelingen,
want de tijd staat niet stil.

Apart from the design, the
selected fabric is an important
item in relation to the presen-
tation of furniture. Most people
do not only select Gelderland
furniture for the living pleasure
of today, but also for the future.
And this expectation has
already been met for decades,
with a great deal of verve.
Each day we are presented
with models for which, after
many years of intensive use,
a complete renovation is
requested. This is the best
compliment with regard to
timeless design and durability
one could only dream of.
Following a precise inspection
the interior is renewed, if such
is required. Due to the special
Gelderland system with the
“free” covers, it is always
possible to select new fabric
designs. Even while having a
vast selection of fabrics, you
may want to select the same
fabric you had when you first
purchased the model. How-
ever, we are also open for new
developments, after all, time
brings change. As such your
couch will follow the changes of
your requirements during time.

1942
Jan des Bouvrie werkte na zijn
opleiding aan de Rietveld-acade-
mie in Amsterdam in de meubel-
zaak van zijn ouders. Nu is hij
eigenaar van het toonaangevende
interieurinstituut het Arsenaal
met een eigen ontwerpstudio.
De ontwerpen van Jan des Bouvrie
zijn in de loop der jaren beloond
met talloze prijzen en onderschei-
dingen, waaronder de Cultuurprijs
in 1974, de Stijlprijs voor zijn
fauteuil 5470F in 1990 en de
Meubelprijs voor de zitmeubelse-
rie 6430 in 1999. Jan des Bouvrie
werkt al 39 jaar voor Gelderland.
Jan des Bouvrie: “Een meubel
moet in de eerste plaats de mens
dienen; het moet comfortabel zijn;
je moet je er lekker in voelen”.
After graduating from the Rietveld
Academy in Amsterdam, Jan des
Bouvrie worked in his parents’
furniture business. Now he is the
owner of a leading interior design
institute called the Arsenaal, which
has its own design studio. Over the
years, Jan des Bouvrie’s designs
have won many awards and distinc-
tions, including the Culture Prize in
1974, the Style Prize for his armchair
5470F in 1990 and the Furniture Prize
for the seating furniture series 6430
in 1999. Jan des Bouvrie has worked
for Gelderland for the past 39 years.
Jan des Bouvrie: “A piece of furni-
ture must serve people before all
else, it must be comfortable, you
have to feel good in it.”
Dick Spierenburg
1953
Dick Spierenburg is een samen-
werkingsverband aangegaan
met ontwerper Karel Boonzaaijer
onder de naam KBDS. Behalve
als productontwerper zijn beiden
actief als adviseur en ruimtelijk
vormgever bij vele en zeer diverse
projecten. In het verleden was
Dick Spierenburg betrokken
bij initiatieven als het Pakhuis
Amsterdam (als directeur).
Hij heeft een sterke voorkeur
voor eenvoud, oorspronkelijkheid
en kwaliteit. Gebruikswaarde en
uitvoerbaarheid zijn onlosmake-
lijk aan zijn ideeën verbonden.
Krachtige vormtaal en esthetische
balans zijn zeker zo belangrijk.
Dick Spierenburg has entered into
a joint venture with designer Karel
Boonzaaijer. This joint venture is
named KBDS. Apart from both being
product designers, they are active
as advisors and spatial designers
for a large number and very diverse
projects as well. In the past Dick
Spierenburg was involved with
Pakhuis Amsterdam as Director.
He has a strong preference for
simplicity, originality and quality.
User value and feasibility are
inextricably bound with his ideas.
Powerful design language and
ethical balance are just as important.
Stefan Steenkist
1968
Stefan Steenkist studeerde
in 1994 cum laude af aan de
Design Academy in Eindhoven.
In datzelfde jaar viel zijn
examenwerk op tijdens een
tentoonstelling in de Amster-
damse Beurs van Berlage en
op de Internationale Meubel-
beurs in Milaan. De fauteuil
6290F die Steenkist ontwierp
voor Gelderland, werd in 1998
genomineerd voor de Neder-
landse Stijlprijs. Steenkist
ontwerpt meubelen met
persoonlijkheid. In de ogen
van Stefan Steenkist moet
een meubel niet alleen mooi,
functioneel, comfortabel en
kwalitatief goed zijn, het moet
ook emotie uitstralen. “Deze
manier van menselijk contact
maakt mijn ontwerpen eigen-
zinnig en zelfstandig”, aldus
Stefan Steenkist.
Stefan Steenkist graduated
cum laude in 1994 from the
Design Academy in Eindhoven.
In that same year, the work he
had done for his exams attract-
ed attention during an exhibi-
tion at the Beurs van Berlage
in Amsterdam and the Interna-
tional Furniture Fair in Milan.
The armchair 6290F that
Steenkist designed for Gelder-
land was nominated for the
Dutch Style Prize in 1998. Stefan
Steenkist designs furniture with
personality. He believes that
furniture should not only be
beautiful, functional, comforta-
ble and of high quality, but that
it should also express emotion.
“This type of ‘human contact’
makes my designs unique and
independent”, says Stefan
Steenkist.
Henk Vos
1939
Henk Vos studeerde interieur-
architectuur aan de Academie voor
Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam.
Vanaf 1963 tot 2006 leidde hij
samen met zijn familie een
toonaangevend interieurinstituut
in Groningen. Een belangrijke
schakel hierin is het bureau voor
interieurarchitectuur met als
opdrachtgevers onder meer KBB,
het Confectiecentrum in Amster-
dam, VNU en TNT. De ontwerpen
van Henk Vos onderscheiden zich
door eenvoudige, simpele vormen
en strakke lijnen. ‘Liever leeg dan
lelijk’ is dan ook het motto van
deze designer wiens, ontwerpen
niet alleen door hun tijdloze
schoonheid, maar ook door het
gebruik van kwalitatief hoog-
staande materialen, een lange
levensduur hebben.
Henk Vos studied interior architec-
ture at the Academy of Visual Arts
in Rotterdam. From 1963 untill 2006,
he and his family have managed a
leading interior institute in Gronin-
gen. An important part of this
institute is the agency for interior
architecture, with clientele that
includes KBB, the Confectiecentrum
in Amsterdam, VNU and TNT. The
designs of Henk Vos stand out due
to their simple form and sleek lines.
“Better empty than ugly” is the
motto of this designer, whose
creations enjoy a long life thanks
not only to their timeless beauty,
but also to the use of high-quality
materials.
Roderick Vos
1965
Driedimensionaal vormgeven.
Dit klinkt hightech, maar Roderick
Vos bedoelt het anders. Hij maakt
prototypes het liefst met de hand.
Daardoor komt hij al tijdens het
creatieve proces letterlijk in aan-
raking met alle aspecten van
design, materiaalbehandeling en
productie. Roderick Vos studeerde
aan de Design Academy in Eindho-
ven en was trainee bij o.a. Ingo
Maurer in München. Van 1990 tot
1996 had hij een eigen ontwerp-
bureau in Indonesië. Tot 2004 was
hij intensief betrokken bij Vos
Interieur in Groningen en sinds-
dien concentreert hij zich op zijn
eigen ontwerpstudio. “Mijn manier
van werken is anders dan die van
generatiegenoten. Ik maak alleen
een krabbel, ga naar mijn studio/
werkplaats en ontwikkel daar
meteen 3D-prototypes op ware
grootte. Ik houd van vakwerk,
sta er bovenop.”

It sounds high-tech, but this is
not the intention of Roderick Vos.
He makes prototypes, preferably
by hand. As a result, he already
literally comes into contact with
all aspects of design, material
treatment and production during
the creative process. Roderick Vos
studied at the Design Academy in
Eindhoven and was a trainee at Ingo
Maurer in Munich. From 1990 until
1996, he had his own design office
in Indonesia. Up until 2004, he was
actively involved with Vos Interieur
in Groningen and devotes his full
attention to his own design studio
now. “My way of working is different
to that of my contemporaries.
I simply scribble something, go to
my studio/workshop and immedi-
ately develop 3D prototypes that are
full-scale models. I love craftsman-
ship, and take it very seriously”

Scholten & Baijings
1972/1973
Scholten & Baijings is een
samenwerkingsverband van
Stefan Scholten, die in 1996 zijn
opleiding aan de Design Academy
in Eindhoven heeft afgerond en
Carole Baijings. Zij is binnen het
vakgebied vormgeving autodi-
dact. Het tweetal werkt sinds
2000 samen. Hun werk kenmerkt
zich door terughoudendheid in
vormgeving en oog voor detail.
Sinds 2005 zijn de ontwerpers
werkzaam voor Gelderland met
de serie 6900. De minimalistische
vorm van de ontwerpen sluit
naadloos aan bij de Gelderland
collectie. Een deel van hun werk is
opgenomen in de vaste collecties
van Centraal Museum Utrecht,
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam,
Textielmuseum Tilburg en Design
Museum Gent. Ze zijn sinds 2006
als docent betrokken bij de
Design Academy.
Scholten & Baijings is a joint
venture between Stefan Scholten,
who, in 1996, successfully complet-
ed his study at the Design Academy
in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and
Carole Baijings who is an autodidact
in design. In 2000 the duo started
their joint venture and their work
is characterised by restraint in
design and eye for detail. In the
year 2005 these designers started
working on the Gelderland series
6900. The minimalist design
seamlessly fits the Gelderland
collection. Part of their work is
brought into the permanent
collection of the Central Museum
in Utrecht, the Municipal Museum
in Amsterdam, the Textile museum
in Tilburg, all in the Netherlands,
as well as in the Design Museum
in Ghent, Belgium. They are both
lecturers at the Design Academy
since 2006.
Bart Vos
1969
Na zijn studie aan de Academie
voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den
Haag stond Bart Vos in 1996 aan
de basis van het ontwerp van
de winkel van Vos Interieur in
Groningen. Inmiddels heeft hij
daar de totale creatieve leiding.
Met zijn bureau voor interieurar-
chitectuur en productvormgeving
verzorgt hij toonaangevende
in- en exterieurs in binnen- en
buitenland. Sinds 2007 is Bart
werkzaam voor Gelderland met de
serie 7200. “Mensen moeten uit
het strakke keurslijf van interieur-
inrichting. Zelf nadenken vind ik
belangrijk. Met de 7200 kun je de
bank creëren die bij je past, qua
compositie, vorm, formaat en stof.
Het ontwerp is eenvoudig, strak
en bescheiden. Met zijn oneindige
mogelijkheden krijgt iedere bank
een eigen karakter en is zo
geschikt voor elk interieur.”
Following the successful comple-
tion of his studies at the Academy
of Visual Arts in The Hague, the
Netherlands, Bart Vos was the
initiator of the design of the store
Vos Interieur in Groningen in 1996.
He now is responsible for the over-
all creative management. With his
agency for interior architecture
and product design he realises
renowned interiors and exteriors
on national and international level.
In 2007 Bart started his cooperation
with Gelderland in relation to series
7200. “People should be freed of
the shackles of interior decoration.
Individual ideas are what I experi-
ence to be important. The series
7200 allows you to create a couch
fitting to your style, in relation to
composition, design, size and fabric.
The design is simple, taut and
modest at the same time. With its
endless possibilities each couch will
have its own character and is as
such suited for each size and type
of interior.”

Enthoven Associates is een
studiebureau gespecialiseerd
in productontwikkeling en
innovatieve research. Zowel
het uitwerken van concepten
als de uiteindelijke ontwikke-
ling en opvolging van de
productpresentatie behoren
tot de activiteiten. Sinds 1989
is Axel Enthoven professor
aan de Design Academy in
Eindhoven en hoofd van het
departement Mens en
Mobiliteit.
Founder and President of
Enthoven Associates Design
Consultants, in Antwerp,
Belgium. Enthoven Associates
is a research agency specialised
in product development and
innovative research. The
activities include the elaboration
of concepts as well as the final
development and follow-up of
the product presentation. In 1989
Axel Enthoven was appointed
professor at the Design Academy
in Eindhoven, the Netherlands
and head of the department
“Mens en Mobiliteit”. (Humans
and Mobility).

Het werken met designers is

voor Gelderland traditie. Een
goed ontwerp is voor Gelder-
land al sinds het prille begin
in de jaren 30 een belangrijke
pijler. In de tweede helft van
de vorige eeuw waren een
aantal ontwerpers medever-
antwoordelijk voor de uitbouw
en het succes van de Gelderland
collectie. Rob Parry, Jan des
Bouvrie en Henk Vos legden
in die tijd met hun ontwerpen
een stevige basis. We zoeken
voortdurend naar nieuwe,
goede ontwerpen. Met een
open blik naar de ontwikkelin-
gen in onze woon- en werk-
omgeving worden jaarlijks
nieuwe modellen gepresen-
teerd. Van bekende maar ook
van nieuwe designers; om uw
woonwensen altijd te kunnen
vervullen!

Working with designers is an

approach which is a tradition
for Gelderland, a tradition
which has a long history. For
Gelderland the importance of
a proper design is not a whim
or trend, but an important pillar,
as it has been since the thirties.
In the second half of the last
century a number of designers
have been of significant impor-
tance for the extension and
the success of the Gelderland
collection. The designs of Rob
Parry, Jan des Bouvrie and Henk
Vos ensured a solid foundation
for this. We are permanently
in search of new, good designs.
With an open mind for develop-
ments in our living and work-
ing surroundings, models are
introduced each year. Models
designed by renowned and by
new, young designers, in order
to be able to continuously meet
your vision on living.
