GLOSSARY

Structural (or formal) syllabus: The structural syllabus is based on a theory of


language that assumes that the grammatical or structural aspects of language form
are the most basic or useful. The content of the structural syllabus is language
form, primarily grammatical form, and the teaching is defined in terms of form.

Notional/Functional Syllabus: It is one in which the content of language teaching


is a collection of the functions that are performed when language is used, or of the
notions that language is used to express.

Situational syllabus: The primary purpose of situational language teaching


syllabus is to teach the language that occurs in the situations. Examples of
situations include: seeing then dentist, complaining to the landlord, buying a book
at the bookstore, meeting a new student, asking directions in a new town, and so
on.

Skill-based syllabus: It is one in which the content of language teaching is a


collection of specific abilities that may play a part in using language.

Task-based syllabus: The defining characteristic of task-based content is that it


uses activities that the learners have to do for non-instructional purposes outside of
the classroom as opportunities for language learning. The intent of task-based
learning is to use learners' real-life needs and activities as learning experiences,
providing motivation through immediacy and relevancy.

Content-Based Syllabus: The primary purpose of the instruction is to teach some


content or information using the language that the students are also learning.
