Invermay Primary School

Learn Today, Achieve Tomorrow

Invermay Primary School is located on the corner of Holbrook and Mayne Streets, Invermay, Tasmania.
The school was established in 1889 and has a tradition of providing quality state funded education for
students in Years K - 6 from the surrounding community. Like all Tasmanian government schools,
Invermay Primary School is committed to the goal that every student has the opportunity to learn and
achieve at his or her potential. The school is guided by the ‘LEARNERS FIRST’ framework and
embraces the government’s priority areas including Literacy and Numeracy - improving the basic
literacy and numeracy skills for all school-aged children.

Invermay Primary School is committed to working with its community and supporting teachers working
together to design personalised learning opportunities for all students. Early Learning Programs for
children from Birth to 4 years run weekly, offering learning experiences that help to prepare both
children and parents to ‘start school’. The Early Learning Centre enables the school to offer 15 hours
of Kindergarten for its youngest students.

The school curriculum is supported by a diverse range of resources and facilities:

 A Physical Education teacher, dedicated to developing children’s motor and sporting skills.
 A specialist music facility and specialist music teachers, dedicated to the development of
instrumental, vocal and performance skills.
 A central library resource area utilizes the latest in computer and communication technology,
including wireless laptops for students.

We have an active School Association and Parents & Friends Association.

The School Association has many objectives and functions including: to participate in the formulation of
school policies and code of conduct, provide advice and recommendations to the Principal, foster
co-operation in the school community, to approve the school budget and provide advice and
recommendations to the Department of Education Secretary on any matter relating to policy.

The Parents & Friends Association is a fundraising body, holding monthly meetings to provide a forum
for parents to discuss school issues.

SZapp from Schoolzine provides schools with an easy way to tell parents/carers everything they need to
know, and it provides parents with the most convenient way to receive school notifications.

SZapp is a free mobile App which works through both smart phones and smart devices (such as iPads
and Android tablets).

Content added to SZapp include our weekly newsletters, news, upcoming events, last minute
cancellations etc. You can also find our school information handbook, canteen menu & prices and
uniform price lists.

There is an absence form for advising us if your child/children are absent. You don’t need to wait until
the school office is open to ring - just complete the eform at your own convenience and submit.

If you are not able to access the SZapp App, you can choose to have the weekly newsletter emailed to
you or you can collect a paper copy from the school office. If your preference is email, please provide us

REGISTRATION TO WORK WITH VULNERABLE PEOPLE

If you volunteer at this school, you will be required to register for “Registration to Work with Vulnerable
People”. This is mandatory. This registration aims to significantly improve safeguards to help keep
children safe from harm. There is a small cost for the registration which is approximately $20.00 for a
volunteer; this covers you for 3 years.
Volunteering includes attending school excursions, working in the canteen, being involved in the reading
program etc.

Under the legislation:

 Employees and volunteers must apply for their own Working with Vulnerable People Registration
(RWVP) once every three years.
 The same RWVP will apply to everyone - employees, self-employed people and volunteers.
 There are two forms of Registration; Volunteer Class and Employment/Volunteer Class.
This second class allows a person to both work and volunteer with children.

 Everyone with registration will be continuously monitored for serious offences.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR RWVP?

1. Complete the online application form. This is available from the website
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/working_with_children
It is important that you choose Department of Education from the drop down box.
2. Print the ‘application receipt’ which is generated when the application has been completed in
full (if you do not have access to a printer, record the reference number and take that to a
Service Tasmania shop).
3. Take the ‘application receipt’ to a Service Tasmania shop, have your photo taken and have
your identity confirmed. A driver’s licence will do this if it displays your correct name and
address.
4. The Tasmanian Department of Justice will assess and process applications and issue a Working
with Vulnerable People registration card directly to the applicant. Generally applicants will
receive this within six weeks of completing the application process.

ALLERGY AWARE SCHOOL
Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. We want to do our best to keep those at
risk, as safe as possible. Avoidance of the trigger food is the only way to prevent a reaction.
Students are asked not to bring any nut products (eg: peanut butter, Nutella) or raw egg products in
their lunch boxes. We also ask that children who have peanut butter for breakfast on school days please
wash their hands thoroughly and clean their teeth before coming to school. Our paramount concern is
for the safety and well-being of all children in our care. Teachers will do everything they can to assist,
reinforcing the policy through class discussions and at assemblies. Should parents wish to discuss this
issue with senior staff, please feel free to do so.
