1. Discuss briefly why IQR is a significant statistic.
-IQR or Inter-quartile range is significant in statistics because tells us how far apart the first and third
quartiles are, it indicates how spread out the “middle” values are. It is also used to identify the outliners.
2. What is an outlier?
-An outliner is any data value that lies more than 1.5 times the interquartile range (IQR) of a data set
beyond the first or third quartiles. It was also said that an outliner is an observation that lies at a distance
from other values in a data set.
3. Which one of the following statistics would be affected by the outlier: Mean, median, mode and
range? Briefly explain your answer.
-The Range is the most affected by an outliner in a way that it is always at the ends of the data,
and since the outlier is always an extreme, it will always be closer to the range then the median.
4. Determine whether there is an outlier in the data set presented below. Please show your solution
(How you did it)
16, 18, 28, 13, 50, 31, 25, 22, 18, 23, 29, 38
M1 M2 M3

13,16,18,18,22,23,25,28,29,31,38,50

Q1 Q2 Q3

Q1: 18 + 18 = 36 / 2= 18
Q2: 23 + 25 = 48 / 2 =24
Q3: 29 + 31 = 60 / 2= 30
IQR: 30 - 18 = 12

18-1.5(12) , 30+1.5(12)
=0 =48

In Conclusion, there is an outliner in the data set which is 50.
