The Legend of Kesodo Feast in Mount Bromo

Orientation

Hundreds years ago, the last king of Majapahit had a young princess from one of his wives. The princess
was named Roro Anteng. Later, Roro Anteng married Joko Seger, who came from Brahman caste.

(PARAGRAPH 1)

Complication

Because of unfortunate situation the couple was forced to leave the kingdom. They settled in the
mountain area. They ruled the area and named it Tengger, which was derived from their names, Roro
Anteng and Joko Seger

After several years of reign, the region flourished in prosperity, but Roro Anteng and Joko Seger
were sad because they did not have a child. They climbed the top of mountain and prayed there night
and day hoping that the God would listen. The prayer was heard and Betoro Bromo promised to give
them many children. However, they had to promise that they would sacrifice their youngest child in
return.

Roro Anteng gave birth to a child, then another and another. In the end, Roro Anteng and Joko
Seger had 25 children. Soon it was time to sacrifice the youngest child , Kusuma, but the parents could
not do it. They tried to hide him, but an eruption happened and Kusuma fell into the crater. There was
silence before they heard a voice. “I have to be sacrificed so that you will all stay alive. From now on,
you should arrange an annual offering ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo (the twelfth month of Tengerese
calendar)”. It was Kusuma’s voice.

Resolution

Kusuma’s brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year. Instead of human being,
they collected fruits, vegetables, rice, and meat to be off to the Gods.

Bookmark

Abstract

Are you a fan of reading? If you are, then you may not be a stranger to the terms “bookmark”.
Bookmark is something that we put between the pages of the book when we stop reading at
certain page of it so we can easily open the page later when we want to continue reading.

Orientation

When I was five years old I started reading novels. Some of my close friends who often came to
my house decided to read books just like I did. They asked their parents to buy some comic
books and novels for them. Sometimes, they came to my house with their collections of book
and we stayed in my bedroom all day.
Crisis

One day, I made a bookmark from a small stick and I painted it by using watercolor. I put it in a
novel as a sign of the last page I was reading. When my friend saw it, they asked me to make
one for each of them because they thought that the bookmark was beautiful.

I prepared some sticks and pick up some watercolor and brush. I painted it one by one and I
place them under the sun to make it dry. When the bookmark is ready, I gave it to my friends.
They were very happy to receive it and they place it inside their books. My friends didn’t realize
that their hands were sweaty at that moment.

Incident / Reaction

The next day, all of them came to my house. Their faces looked so upset and they showed me
their book. The paper turned colourful because the watercolor from the bookmark turned back
into liquid form when they touched it before they place it inside their books. I feel bad about
what happened to their book, but there was nothing that I can do.

Coda

Ever since that moment, I always try to be careful when I want to help others or give something
to others.
