I. Objectives
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of: East Asian literature as an art form inspired and
influenced by nature; relationship of visual, sensory, and verbal signals in both literary and
expository texts; strategies in listening to long descriptive and narrative texts; value of literal
and figurative language; and appropriate grammatical signals or expressions suitable to
patterns of idea development.
B. Performance Standard The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering a brief and creative entertainment
speech featuring a variety of effective paragraphs, appropriate grammatical signals or
expressions in topic development, and appropriate prosodic features, stance, and behavior.
C. Learning Competency EN8V-IIa-24.1: Distinguish between and among verbal, situational, and dramatic types of irony and give
examples of each
D. Enabling Objectives Give examples of statement in each type of irony.

B. During the Lesson Ask the students the following questions:
1. How would you feel if someone tells you this line... “You’re beautiful/handsome, you
look like a frog.”
2. What does that line really means?
3. How about when your best friend tells you this ... “Did ten people punched you in
your face?” (while wearing a dark red shade of blush on. Would you just find it as
insulting as the first statement?
(Facilitate class discussion)
C. Lesson Proper Discuss Irony and Its Types

Irony – words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the
actual.

Types of Irony
1. Verbal Irony – when speaker tells something contradictory to what he/she intends to
say.
a. Sarcasm – speaks bitterly
ex. You are so intelligent to get nothing on the exam.
Your dress is beautiful, it looks like the curtain in our house.
b. Overstatement – act of stating something more profoundly than it actually is.
ex. There has never been a more beautiful day than this, with you in my front.
We were so poor that even the mice refused to come into our house.
c. Understatement – to intentionally make a situation seems less important than it
really is.

ex. At least the plants will get watered. (a typhoon)


He’s not tall. (talking about a basketball player)
2. Situational Irony – irony of events
ex.
a. A marriage counselor files for divorce.
b. The police station gets robbed.
c. A pilot has a fear of heights.

3. Dramatic Irony – when the audience knows something that is going to happen but
the characters are unaware of what is going on
ex. A woman thinks her boyfriend is acting strangely because he’s about to propose
but the audience knows that he is planning to run away with another woman.

D. After The Lesson Let students think of a scenario in their life in which they already used irony. Let them list it on
a half sheet of paper with types indicated.
