Part II (Continued): Before & After

The original lesson plan that I chose for this assignment deals with the relationship

between a cyber bully and a victim. This lesson plan was designed for a 5th grade language arts

class. The lesson is designed with two main components. The first is a discussion between the

teacher and the students about cyber bullying. The second part involves students using their

creative skills to design art work that expresses their thoughts and feelings about the relationship

between a cyber bully and a victim.

I decided to take an old problem (bullying) and give it a modern twist (cyber bullying).

As social media becomes more prevalent in our lives, cyber bullying has become increasingly
LESSON PLAN: CYBER BULLYING 6

problematic, especially among children. I feel that this is a great opportunity to bring awareness

of cyber bullying to our students. For the new lesson, the first component remains somewhat

similar to the original lesson plan. The teacher will begin the discussion with talking about

bullying; however, this time the discussion will be centered on bullying that occurs on the

internet.

The second component of the revised lesson plan is where technology really comes into

play. Rather than create artwork with physical utensils, the students will create a video

presentation on the web-based animation software called PowToons. They will utilize pre-

created objects, imported images, music, and voice-overs. After creating their videos, students

will share their presentation with the class. The lesson will be wrapped up with a group

discussion about what was learned.

Part III: Assessment Plan

This lesson plan aligns with the state of South Carolina computer science and digital

literacy process standards set forth for fifth grade students. The discussion and expression on

thoughts and feelings of cyber bullying seeks to satisfy the following standards:

5.DL.2.1 Demonstrate an understanding of digital security

5DL.2.2. Demonstrate an understanding of digital rights and responsibilities
The utilization of the PowToons computer software program satisfies the following
standards:
5.DL.1.3 Format a presentation using presentation software (e.g., add transitions
and speaker notes).
5.CS.2.1 Explore and compare multiple software applications (e.g., word
processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, web browser).
In this lesson, learning is measured by the final presentation of the video project.

Students will learn about cyber bullying at the beginning of the lesson through lecture and
LESSON PLAN: CYBER BULLYING 7

collaboration. Then, they will create their PowToons video using the knowledge and material

they learned during the discussion. They will also learn skills as they work through the video

presentation software. Full comprehension will be realized after the final video is complete and

presented to the class. This lesson is a prime example of a formative assessment, as the learning

process is on-going.

In the United States, every citizen has legal rights and social responsibilities. As

technology becomes more integrated with today’s society, these duties have carried over into the

world of cyberspace. Digital citizenship aims to teach everyone what technology users must

understand in order to use digital technologies effectively and appropriately (Maloy, Verock-

OLoughlin, & Edwards, 2017). As teachers, it is our responsibility to adapt curriculum so that

students are able to understand and practice proper digital citizenship. This revised lesson in

cyber bullying is the epitome of a lesson plan that has been adapted to teach students how to be

exemplar digital citizens.
