Technology is shaping the learning that is now taking place in the 21 st Century classroom. Schools are
converting to 1:1 classroom learning at an increased rate. Schools that do not have the ability to
implement 1:1 learning (due to funding) have consorted to BYOD/T or bring your own
devices/technology. Students can bring their own technology-based device like laptops, tablets,
notebooks, or a mobile computing device while learning in the classroom. Allowing students to operate
device independently will allow implementation of personalized learning when they are not working in
group collaborations.
For BYOD parents will be informed that the device of choice is Chromebooks/Android devices.
Chromebooks are more budget-friendly. Students have access to keyboards rather than a tablet which
will ensure that they would have typing skills required for state testing. Considering the activities that
students will need to engage in and have access to, it is best that they use Chromebooks.
When implementing BYOD/T it is important to take note that all students will not have devices available
to bring to school for learning. Teachers should send home a survey to find out what students have
devices available that can be used for school use. Library mobile cart could be signed out by the teacher
on certain days and times to implement for learning. Instead of checking out an entire cart of devices,
the teacher could check out five to set up as a learning station and allow students to rotate through
them during station rotation times of reading.
Students will be grouped using a variety of combined strategies. When using an app such as Kahoot,
student will be allowed to answer questions in groups when working as a team, other times, students
will compete individually as a whole group to answer the correct quiz questions. It would be preferred
that students work independently when working with technology unless they are working on a group
assignment. When group work is required students will be grouped based on content mastery data
yielded from pre-assessments and exit tickets. When group work is taking place a student leader will be
designated per group to assist with technology needs when teacher is working with a small group.
