Unit Plan (CAEP Standards 1.1, 1.4)

GUIDING QUESTIONS

 What do you see in the sky at night?

 What do you notice about the stars?
 Do you think people on the other side of the world see the same stars and constellations
as we do?
 What do the season have to do with the stars?
 After looking at a constellation, what story can you write about them?

MICHIGAN ACADEMIC STANDARDS

5-ESS1-2— Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length
and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the
night sky.

ART.D.II.5.1—Create a sequence with a beginning, middle, and end, both with and without a
rhythmic accompaniment. Identify each of these parts of the sequence.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3.B
Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences
and events or show the responses of characters to situations.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3.D
Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events
precisely.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.6
With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to
produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate
sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.

 Demonstrate their understanding of constellation patterns and earths movement by

writing and illustrating a legend about a specific constellation.
 Name the constellations and which constellations are visible from earth during
summer, spring, autumn, and winter.
 Research constellations on computer and in the library

KNOWLEDGE OF STUDENTS

 5-PS2-1--Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects

is directed down.

 5-ESS1-1--Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun

compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth.
