5 Explain the order of today’s lesson, learning intentions and success


Review of lesson

10 Orchestra Diagram
Explain sound sources and the families of the orchestra and why
certain instruments are designated in that family. Start off with own
example and then the for the following instruments, ask students if
they know what families they belong to.
Hand out the diagram of the orchestra family and have students
colour in each family a different colour for memorisation while
discussing pre-topic knowledge.

15-20 ‘Introduction to the


Instruments of the
Orchestra’ YouTube Watch video and identify the instruments. Ask students to identify the
Video popular songs each instrument plays.

Have students after each instrument has played say what kind of
sound they believe the instruments are playing using tone colour
words. Write answers on the board.

Provide students with the Spotify playlist of orchestra music via

Encourage discussion about the orchestra and favourite instrument.

criteria whilst also writing them on the board.

5-10 Worksheet
Multiple choice ‘Musical Instruments’ Worksheet 3. Student are to
complete multiple choice questions on the orchestra instruments,
choosing what families they belong to.

Extension work or H/W: research an orchestral instrument not on the


list and write/verbally explain what family it belongs to and how it is
similar/different to instruments of its family.
10-12 Instrument Pictures ‘Match the sound to the Instrument’: students will all be given a
MP3 excerpts
physical copy of pictures for orchestral instruments and are to write
down which excerpts they believe match.

Enter a discussion about concepts studied with each excerpt, possibly


give these throughout as hints.

Rhythm Game Students form a circle and are assigned a number, clapping in counts

of 4, and passing the beat to a random person and answering an
orchestra question. Whoever goes out of timing or is incorrect goes to
the front of the line.
