STUDY GUIDE UNIT 1 “THE FIRST RESPONDER”
1. Watch the short video and write a brief summary making special emphasis on the role of the
first responders.
• Ambulance: a vehicle equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from hospital, especially
in emergencies.
• Paramedic: a person trained to give emergency medical care to people who are seriously ill with
the aim of stabilizing them before they are taken to hospital.
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): are formally certified and trained health professionals
that provide emergency medical services most commonly found working in ambulances.
• Mechanical ventilator: is a machine that helps a patient breathe (ventilate) when they are having
surgery or cannot breathe on their own due to a critical illness. The patient is connected to the
ventilator with a hollow tube (artificial airway) that goes in their mouth and down into their main
airway or trachea.
• Gurney: a flat table, or a light frame covered with cloth, which has wheels and is used for moving
people who are ill or injured.
• Wheelchair: is a chair with wheels, used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness,
injury, old age-related problems, or disability.
• Pacemaker: is a small, battery-operated device. This device senses when your heart is beating
irregularly or too slowly. It sends a signal to your heart that makes your heart beat at the correct
pace.
• Defibrillator: is a machine that gives your heart an electric shock to re-establish a normal heart
rhythm. It's used in cardiac arrest.

4. Define what a hospital is. Investigate and write about different types of hospital stating their
main characteristic.
Acute care
Hospital that exists solely to provide assessment and treatment of individuals with addictions.
Community (General)
Non-federal, short-term (acute care) hospital where diagnostic and therapeutic services are
available to the public.
Rural Hospital
Hospital that is located outside the U.S. Census-designated Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Urban Hospital
Hospital that is located within the U.S. Census-designated Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Hospital that provides medical and skilled nursing services to patients with long-term illnesses who
are not in an acute phase but require a level of service not available in a nursing home.
Psychiatric Hospital
Hospital that provides diagnostic and treatment services to patients with mental and/or emotional
disorders.
Rehabilitation Hospital
Hospital that provides medical, health-related, social, and/or vocational services to disabled
individuals to help them attain their maximum functional capacity.
Teaching Hospital
Hospital that has an accredited medical residency-training program and usually has affiliation with
a medical school.
