Assignment 2 – Torsion
Assignment Question:

The drive shaft AB of an automobile (Figure 1) is to be designed as a

thin-walled tube. The engine delivers 115 kW when the shaft is turning
at 1500 rev/min. Determine the minimum thickness of the shaft’s wall if
the shaft’s outer diameter is 60 mm. The material has an allowable shear
stress of 50 MPa.

Figure 1

Answer:
Firstly , we calculate the Angular Velocity when the given frequency of the drive shaft is
1500 rev/min. So by using the equation of angular velocity ( 𝜔=2𝜋𝑓/60 ) ,we get the value of
the drive shaft angular velocity is 157.08 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 . After finding the angular velocity, we can
calculate the torque using the power transmission from engine, 115 𝑘𝑊 and the turning of
shaft, 157.08 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 By using power transmission equation ( 𝑃= 𝜔𝑇 ) So if we want to find
The torque we need to use the equation ( 𝑇= 𝑃/𝜔 ). The result of the internal torque in the
drive shaft is 732.11N/m

From the question we can calculate the Co by dividing the shaft’s outer diameter which is
60mm/2 equal to 0.03m . The Allowance Shear for the shaft AB is 50 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and then convert
it to paskal. After that, we need to find the allowance shear , 𝜏𝐴𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤=𝑇AB𝐶𝑜/𝐽

Lastly, we need to find the 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑎, 𝐽𝑇𝑢𝑟𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟=𝜋2 (𝐶𝑜4− 𝐶𝑖4)
