Jesus Alberto Rey Mariño, (Colombia; Pamplona, 1956 – Bucaramanga, 2009) or Chucho Rey,

Was a Colombian Composer from “Norte de Santander.” His father, Carlos Julio Rey, was a
well-known musician from the department of “Norte de Santander,” especially for his
compromise with the typical music from the Andina Region.

Jesus Alberto Rey made his studies in “La Universidad pedagogica de Bogota” as a pianist and
teacher. He was an ambassador from “ El Ministerio de Cultura y Turismo” (Entity in charge of
the culture in Colombia) in the national choir program. Also, he gave lessons and lectures in
many Colombian places to show the roots of the music from his native place, Norte de
Santander.

He won many prizes and scholarships, some of them are:

-          “Beca de Creacion Colcultura”, with the project “ De Blancos y Negros en Negras y


Blancas” 1996. This work was one of the most famous works from his compositions

-          First price as a composer in the VI edition of the composition competition Carlos Vieco
Ortiz.

-          Author of the series “Musica Maestro.” It was published in the “Editorial Voluntad.”

He was one of the most important pioneers and founders of the “Sistema de Bandas en
Antioquia” (System of Wind Ensemble in Antioquia), and he expanded to the whole country,
creating “El Sistema de Bandas de Colombia” (System of wind ensemble in Colombia). He is
remembered in Colombia as a great pedagogue, particularly in his compositions, where he
explored in a simple language the folklore from Colombia, especially from the region of Norte
de Santander. He was the director of the school of music in the University of Bucaramanga doing
a strong job in the propagation of the Colombian folklore music.

Jesus Alberto Rey Died in 2009 suddenly of a heart attack. After his death, many concerts and
commemorations have been done in his name; one example is the Auditorium Jesus Alberto Rey
Mariño in Bucaramanga city. Many of his jobs have been arranged for different ensembles,
predominantly for Colombian typical groups.
