Theories of Language Acquisition
There are 7 main theories we are taught in this chapter, and they’re directly related to how a
child goes through the early stage of his/her life in order to learn the language used as a mode
of verbal communication around them.
The one model I’m going to write about is ‘Cognitive Theory’.
Cognitive Theory:
This theory was put forward by a Swiss psychologist, ‘Jean Piaget’. He was
born on 9 August 1896 and died on 16 September 1980, he was known for
his work on child development. Piaget’s theory of cognitive development
and epistemological view are together called "genetic epistemology".
He introduced this theory in around 1936 and explained how a child
constructs the mental model of world. He disagreed with the notion that
intelligence was a fixed trait, and regarded cognitive development as a
process which occurs due to biological maturation and a person’s
interaction with the environment.
What Piaget wanted to do was not to measure how well children could
count, spell, or solve problems as a way of grading their IQ. What he was
more interested in was the way in which fundamental concepts like the
idea of numbers, time, quantity, casualty, justice, etc. emerged. He showed
that young children think in strikingly different fashion than adults.
