The Metric System Estimate vs.Actual Metric Measurement

 Metric rulers
 Measuring cup (if available)
 Metric meter sticks
 Bathroom scale (if available)
 Thermometer (if available)
 Various objects to measure

Instructions

 List down objects you see in your house.

 You need to estimate the objects' measurements by writing down your guesses
on the table.

 When all guesses are made, you can use all the measuring tools and measure
the objects using the International System of Measurements.

Answer the following questions.

1. What is the standard unit for length in the metric system? meter
2. What is the abbreviation for this unit? ____m____
3. What instrument will you use in this lab to measure length? Tape measure/
measuring tape___
4. Measure the length and the width of your previous class picture. Measure it in
centimeters and record your measurements below. Be sure to label your measurements
with the correctunits!
Length: __18 cm__ Width: _ 12.5 cm____

5. Area and volume are examples of derived quantities. What are derived quantities?
_Other than Area and Volume, velocity, acceleration, force, energy, pressure or
stress and power are some of the other examples of derived quantities.

6. What formula will you use to measure the area of the picture? Area= Length x Width
or Area= L x W
7. Calculate the area of the picture. Show your work below and don’t forget the label!

Given:
L= 18 cm
W= 12.5 cm
Find:
A=?
Formula:
Area= Length x Width
A= L x W
Computation/Solution:
Area= L x W
A= 18 cm x 12.5 cm
Answer:
A= 225 cm2

8. What formula will you use to calculate the volume of the box provided?
Volume= Length x Width x Height
V= L x W x H______________

9. Calculate the volume of the box. Show your work below and don’t forget your unit
label.

Given:
Length= 20 cm
Width= 3 cm
Height= 8 cm
Find:
V=?
Formula:
Volume= Length x Width x Height
V= L x W x H

Computation/Solution:
V= L x W x H
V= 20 cm x 3 cm x 8 cm
Answer:
V= 480 cm3
