Administrative Management
Henri Fayol (Principles of Management 1 through 7)

1.(Only if this information is available): Who is/are the major advocate/s of this
organization or management approach and what were their professional
background?

Henri Fayol graduated from the National School of Mines in St. Etienne, France. He was
a French mining engineer by training. He later became a managing director in a mining
company named "Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville," an
integrated coal, iron, and steel company in France. During his time as the managing
director, he developed and improved the working situations in the mines. He proposed
theories about management theories in the book he wrote entitled “General and
Industrial Management,” implementing his ideas about the 14 Principles of
Management.

2.What situation must have "triggered" the advocate of this approach to propose
it?

Fayol looked at the tail end of the Industrial Revolution. He observed a work stoppage
that he judged to be a management failure. From that circumstance, he saw a great
need for a systematic approach to training managers for them to be equipped with
adequate knowledge and high levels of managerial competence. Thus, he proposed his
perspective about administrative management.

More so, he mentioned in his book, “It is a case of setting get going, starting general
discussion-- that is what I am trying to do by publishing this survey, and I hope a theory
will emanate from it.” This line imposes that his book is not a means of the end of the
narrative but rather just the beginning. Consequently, a lot of theories emanated from
him.

3. What’s the basis for the approach that they are proposing?

Fayol saw six general activities that are needed to run an organization. It includes the
technical that concerns about production and manufacturing. Second is the
commercial that deals with the buying and selling of goods & services. Third, financial
that deals with the money or the capital. Fourth is the security that involves the
protection of property and people. Fifth is accounting that relates to the balance
sheets, profit, and loss. Lastly, his real area of concern is the managerial activity that
primarily includes planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling.

From there, he saw the activities of the industry at each level, starting from the workman
to the head of the shop and to the manager or CEO. He saw that the managerial activity
is expanding as the hierarchy moves up and that some activities shrink. This scenario is
where Fayol saw the gap. He saw very little systematic training that would train people
on how to become better managers.

4.What’s the focus or emphasis of the approach that they are proposing?

Fayol took a mid-level approach. He was looking at the management side of things.
How shall we manage people? That was the big question he was wondering. That is
why he broke these management activities into five main areas: planning, organizing,
commanding, coordinating, and controlling. These activities portrayed a big picture
of where managers should spend their time. That is why he outlined the principles of
management that were not meant to be rigid but rather to be flexible, depending on the
circumstances the manager is facing.

5.What intended outcome or benefit could result from applying this organization
or management approach?

One of Fayol’s desired outcome for this approach is a clear hierarchy in the organization
that will be organizing the chain of command to reach the team’s common goal. More
so, Fayol emphasized the essence of labor, the division that the more employees are
specialized, the more efficient they are in working. The standardization of the manager’s
work is also an advantage of the administrative management approach since this deals
with the managerial activity. The centralization of authority and the separation of
personal life from organizational is also a benefit of this management approach.  Lastly,
unity and harmony among the employees in organizations must be the ultimate goal of
the manager.

6.How should this approach be applied? Give a more detailed discussion here on
what the organization and its managers should be and should do in order to
apply this approach.

The principles of management were outlined in the book written by Henri Fayol in the
list of 14 items. The 7 of which are

 Division of Work
This focuses on task specialization to increase productivity where each person
gets a small task in an area they are useful to utilize their skills effectively.
 Authority
The manager has the right to give orders, and exact obedience is needed from
the subordinates.
 Discipline
Obedience, application, and energy on the part of the employee, as stated by
Fayol in his book, is a must in an organization. Proper disciplinary measures are
followed to keep the situation well and good.
 Unity of command
An employee should receive orders from one supervisor only. Organizations that
do not have a unity of command stresses the employees making them less
effective.

 Unity of direction
One head and one plan for a group of activities having the same direction
motivates the team to make their vision real. The unity of direction means having
a definite and clear path to reach a specific goal.
 Subordination of Individual Interest to General Interest
An employee must set aside his interest over the general interest to pursue a
greater purpose. This is also analogous to separating one’s personal affairs into
the business world.
 Remuneration
Fayol thought they should be paid fairly and rewarded for their well-directed
effort. If employees work hard to their best, they must be paid what is due to
them.

7. For which types of organizations is this approach applicable?

We can see that this approach is applicable, especially in the field of manufacturing. It is
seen in warehouses and delivery services and as well as in foodservice. Working in
food service like fast food shows that everything is like a production line. The same is
true with farming and food production. So, a lot of ways, not only is it still relevant, it's
even more common than ever. However, some organizations in the Internet like social
media and the like that do not generally manufacture tangible goods, so they do not
take this classical management approach. They may not directly use that approach, but
indeed, they're influenced by it.
