Firmware Update 1.1 FTB-1

Introduction
The Firmware Update is a tool that easily updates the embedded components on your
FTB-1.

Note: The Firmware Update tool replaces the old “Embedded Software Updater”.

Modified Components
Once installed, the embedded components listed below will be updated with the most
recent version available:

Component Version Number

BIOS 1.15.0.0
EC 5.0.0.0

Before downloading the Firmware Update files, you may want to verify if your unit needs to
be updated. You can compare the version numbers appearing in the table above with those of
your unit (see Retrieving the Versions of the Embedded Components of Your Unit on page 2).
You only need to update your unit if its version numbers are earlier to the version numbers
presented in this document.

Retrieving the Versions of the Embedded


Components of Your Unit
You can easily determine the current versions of the embedded components on your unit.

To retrieve the component versions of your unit:


1. In Mini ToolBox, go to Main Menu.
2. Tap System Info, and then Platform.

3. Write down the version numbers (BIOS and EC), and then close the window.

Transferring the Firmware Update File to Your Unit


You can either download the Firmware Update file directly to your unit (unit must be able
to connect to the Internet) or to a USB key that you will connect to your unit later.

If you wish to retrieve the update file on a USB key, you will need:
a computer equipped with a USB port; Windows must be installed on the
computer
a USB memory key.
To download the Firmware Update file directly to your unit:
1. If necessary, turn on your unit.
2. If it is not already done, log on to Windows using an account with administrator user
rights.
3. If necessary, from our Web site (www.exfo.com), go to the My EXFO section.
4. Find the Firmware Update file corresponding to your platform.
5. Copy the installation files to any folder of your choice on your unit.
You are now ready to install the new components. For more information,
see Installing the New Embedded Software Components on Your Unit on page 4.
To retrieve the Firmware Update file using a USB key:
1. Connect a USB memory key to one of the USB ports of a computer.
2. If necessary, from our Web site (www.exfo.com), go to the My EXFO section.
3. Find the Firmware Update file corresponding to your platform.
4. Copy the installation files to the USB key.
5. Disconnect the USB key from the computer.
6. If necessary, turn on your unit.
7. If it is not already done, on your unit, log on to Windows using an account with
administrator user rights.
8. Connect the USB key to one of the USB ports of your unit.
You are now ready to install the new components. For more information,
see Installing the New Embedded Software Components on Your Unit on page 4.

Installing the New Embedded Software


Components on Your Unit
The instructions below will help you update the embedded software components.

Note: You cannot install embedded software components using Update Manager. Please follow
the procedure presented hereafter.

Note: Only administrator-level users can install software on an FTB-1 platform.

IMPORTANT
For a trouble-free installation, ensure that you connect your unit to
a power outlet and that your unit remains on during the process.

IMPORTANT
During the update process, the application may suggest that you
also install the latest System Upgrade on your unit. If this is the
case, you should perform the upgrade. Otherwise, some
applications or modules may no longer function properly.

To install the embedded software components on your unit:


1. Connect your unit to a power outlet.
2. If necessary, turn on the unit.
3. If it is not already done, log on to Windows using an account with administrator user
rights.
4. Install the Firmware Update tool on your unit as follows:
4a. From the folder to which you have copied the update file
(see Transferring the Firmware Update File to Your Unit on page 3), double-
tap the FTB-1 Firmware Update.exe file to start the installation.
4b. When the wizard prompts you, press Next.
4c. Read the end-user license agreement. If you agree with it, select the
I accept the terms in the license agreement option, and then press Next.

Note: The acceptance of the license agreement is mandatory to be able to continue with the
installation.

4d. Follow the on-screen instructions.


Once the Firmware Update tool is installed on your unit, a shortcut is
automatically created on the unit’s desktop.
5. Exit all running applications.

6. If you have used a USB key, disconnect it from your unit.


7. Install the embedded software components as follows:

7a. From the unit’s desktop, double-tap the icon.


7b. When the wizard prompts you, read the instructions, and then tap
Continue to start the installation.
7c. Wait until all components have been updated.
7d. When the wizard notifies you that your unit has to restart, tap OK to
confirm.

Note: If your unit does not restart automatically, from the Windows taskbar, select Start >
Shutdown > Restart.

Your unit will be turned off automatically when the update is complete.
7e. Turn on your unit. You will notice that the Firmware Update tool has been
removed from your unit automatically.
7f. Ensure that the update has been successful by verifying the version numbers
(BIOS and EC). They should correspond to the version numbers listed in this
document. For more information, see Retrieving the Versions of the Embedded
Components of Your Unit on page 2.
8. If the components have not been updated correctly, repeat the procedure presented
above. If the problem persists, contact EXFO.
