La3+ Alters the Response Properties of Neurons in the Mouse Primary

Somatosensory Cortex to Low-Temperature Noxious Stimulation of the
Dental Pulp

Title:

 As a student in Senior High School with a limited background in Chemistry and Biology,

the title of the study is very confusing for me. Despite of that, it dealt a sense of curiosity

as the title is very straight to the point that it already gave an insight about the research. I

just noticed that the result is already stated in the title that maybe some of the viewers

will not care on reading the whole research unless they want to find out ‘how’ it

happened. The title can be developed into a much appropriate title like, “The Effects of

La3+ on the Somatosensory Cortex of a Mouse to Low-Temperature Noxious

Stimulation of the Dental Pulp” or to a much better title similar to that.

Introduction:

 The introduction of the research is very reader friendly. It includes everything that one

must know before going deeply into the research. Although it uses a lot of terms a senior

high school student like me would not know, it is well defined and explained that you

will actually have a glimpse of what it is about. I would like to recommend that he will

further explain the LaCl3 because although the introduction is very well structured and all

the points are very well stated, I am quite not satisfied about the explanation of LaCl 3 and

would like to know more about it. Also, I noticed that the researcher does not follow the

proper format for citation.

Methods:

 The research does not contain its research design but obviously, it is an Experimental

Research. The researcher included the step by step process of conducting the experiment

starting from the ethical statement, animal preparation, the main process, the materials

and the data analysis. It is quite confusing because of those technical terminologies but

once you look up those on the internet, you will understand the process. The way the

researcher constructed the methods and materials is again reader friendly and as you read

through the content, you will actually imagine how they did the process. The researcher

also included a figure of what they did to the subject.

Results and Discussion:

 The results of the research is well stated and the researcher also provided the after effects

of the experiment. I just want to point out where the researcher is inserting the figures. It

is quite messy and confusing that I wish the researcher put the figure after the statement. I

also want to say something about the researcher’s usage of first person point of view

because we are told in our Research subject to use the third person point of view. But as I

roamed on the internet, I found out that it is fine using the first person point of view and

many other scientific journals or researchers are using it. Other than that, there is no other

significant corrections that I noticed. For the discussion part, the researcher restated what

was in the introduction part and then explained the results of the experiment. The

researcher also included the clinical significance and the future directions of the study.

Conclusion:

 The conclusion of the study is much easier to understand than the other parts of the study.

It was explained in a very short but meaningful manner. The researcher also stated what

was lacking in the study that future researchers can fill in for a much accurate results.

Either way, it was concluded in the study that TRP channel blockers are promising to be

used as a treatment for dental pain.

Reflection:

 Finding a research related to chemistry that I actually have interest in is difficult than

actually critiquing the paper. Upon critiquing the paper, I realized that there are a lot of

wonders in this world that a normal person like me do not even know. We are always

seeking for medical help when we are experiencing pain in our bodies without even

realizing its nature or why are the doctors prescribing us this drug and not any other

drugs. Although I am not familiar with this topic and there are a lot of technical

terminologies, this study is well detailed and explained in a reader friendly manner that I

actually learned a lot and made me want to know more. I cannot recommend to use a

beginner friendly terminologies as I think that this study is not intended for a young

student like me but I will appreciate it if all the medical jargons or other technical terms

will be defined because it is much easier than looking it up on the internet all the time. I

also wish that they provide a video of the actual process for academic purposes as it is

much easier to understand when we actually see the whole process. In totality, this study

is well conducted and I hope future researchers will dig in more to it and maybe someday

we will have another drug that can change the world of medicine and our lives.
