4 Projectile Motion:

Projectile motion formula:

The path of an object being thrown can be modeled by the formula:
h(t ) = −16t 2 + vt + s
Where h= height, t-time(in seconds), v=initial velocity(speed of the
object), and s=starting height

1. A tiger leaps from a 12 foot high rock with a speed of 15 feet per
second. How far from the base of the rock will she land?
2. A dud missile is fired into the air from a military instillation. The
missile’s height is given by the formula, ℎ(𝑡) = −16𝑡 2 + 400𝑡 + c) How far does the ball travel?
100.

a) How high is the missile after 4.5 seconds?

d) The Green Monster, located in left field at Fenway Park, is a
popular target for right-handed hitters. The wall is 315 feet
from home plate and stands about 37 feet tall. Does this ball
b) After how many seconds will the missile reach its maximum clear the Green Monster? If so, by how much?
height?

c) What is the maximum height the missile will reach?

d)When will the missile be 2,500 feet above the ground? 4. A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 48 ft.
/sec. If the ball started from a height of 8 ft. off the ground, the
path of the ball is modeled by ℎ(𝑡) = −16𝑡 2 + 48𝑡 + 8.

e) When will the missile be 100 feet above the ground? a) How long does it take the ball to reach its maximum height?

b)What is the maximum height?

f) When will the missile hit the ground?

3. The path of a baseball after it has been hit is modeled by the c) How long will it take the ball to hit the ground?
function ℎ = −0.0028𝑑2 + 𝑑 + 3, where h is the height in feet of
the baseball and d is the distance in feet the baseball is from
home plate.

a) What is the maximum height reached by the baseball? d)How long will it take the ball to be 56 feet above the ground?

b) How far is the baseball from home plate when it reaches its
maximum height?
