Exercise 9.

1 Ideal Gas Equation

1. The pressure of a mass of gas is increased from 150 kPa to 750 kPa at constant temperature. Determine
the final volume of the gas, if its initial volume is 1.5 m3

2. Some gas initially at 16oC is heated to 96oC at constant pressure. If the initial volume of the gas is 0.8 m 3
, determine the final volume of the gas.

3. A gas A in a container exerts a pressure of 120 kPa at a temperature of 20 oC. Gas B is added to the
container and the pressure increases to 300 kPa at the same temperature. Determine the pressure that gas
B alone exerts at the same temperature.

4. A gas occupies a volume of 1.20 m3 when at a pressure of 120 kPa and a temperature of 90 oC.
Determine the volume of the gas at 20oC if the pressure is increased to 320 kPa.

5. The pressure of an ideal gas at 27 oC is 2.5 x 105 Pa. The gas is then heated at constant volume to a
temperature of 100 oC. What is the pressure of the gas at 100 oC?

6. The standard temperature and pressure (STP) is defined a temperature of 273 K and pressure of 1
atmosphere or 1.013 x 105 Pa. Calculate the density of oxygen at STP if the mass of 1 mole of oxygen
gas is 32 g.

7. The gauge pressure of a tyre is the pressure of the air in the tyre above the atmospheric pressure. The
gauge pressure of a car tyre is 210 k Pa at 300 K. After travelling for a long distance, the temperature
of the air inside the tyre is 39 oC, what is its gauge pressure of the air in the tyre? (Atmospheric
pressure is 1.01 x 105 Pa)

8. Use the ideal gas equation to deduce an expression for the pressure of an ideal gas in terms of ρ, the
density of a gas. Identify any additional symbols in your expression.

9. When a scuba diver is at a depth of 10.0 m, the volume of air in his lungs is 5.0 x 10 3 cm3. If the diver
holds his breath, what would be the volume of the air when the diver rises to the surface? State any
assumptions you make. (Density of water is 1000 kg m -3).

10. Air at a temperature of 300 K and a pressure of 1.01 x 105 Pa is drawn into the cylinder of volume
3.0 x 10-4 m3. The air is compressed to a volume of 3.0 x 10 -5 m3 and temperature rises to 800 K.
Calculate the final pressure of the air in the cylinder.

11. The total mass of a hot air balloon and the passengers is 200 kg. The atmospheric pressure is1.01 x
105 Pa and the temperature of the surrounding air is 300 K. The air in the balloon is heated and it
expands at constant pressure. When the balloon starts to lift off the volume of the air in the balloon is
400 m3. Calculate the temperature of the air in the balloon when the balloon starts to lift off.
(Density of surrounding air is 1.25 kg m-3)

12. The volume of an ideal gas at a pressure of 2.0 x 105 Pa and temperature of 300 K is 500 cm3.
Calculate the number of molecules in the gas.
