Most Essential Learning Competency:
Explain how the evolution of media from
traditional to new media shaped the values and
norms of people and society.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, learners are expected
to:
1.Identify and differentiate each stage of the
media evolution.
2. identify traditional media and new media and
their relationships.
3. Familiarize with the concept of the traditional
media and how it evolved.
4. Appreciate the contribution of traditional
media to the new media.
Recall:
The previous lessons provided us with the
knowledge and realization that man’s form of
communication has expanded (from handwritten
communication to the digital interaction –emails,
social media posts, eboards, forums, blogs,
vlogs, etc.) due to the development of media.
Mankind has moved from traditional to the age
of new media and this made our rate of
communication faster and more frequent. The
rise and development in technology has made
media more accessible and faster than ever
before.
Unlocking Difficulties:
• Social Media – The collective means of
Mass communication which includes
broadcast, print, the internet. This
includes websites and apps that allow
users to create and share content or
participate in social networking.
• Pre-historic Era (200,000 BCE – 4,000
BCE) – a time where forms of
communication includes petroglyphs,
cave paintings, body art, and even
dance.
• Ancient Era (3000 BCE – 100 BCE) –
Early forms of writing (cuneiform,
Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Phoenician
Alphabet, drama, and the invention of
paper)
• Industrial Era (1440-1890) – The
printing press, telegraph, camera dry
plates, phonograph, film, and
telephones were invented. Some are still
widely used today in various forms.
• Information Era (1906 – Present) –
Radio, Television, Personal computer,
Mobile phones, Internet)
DISCUSSION:
What does Media do for us? Besides the
obvious service of communication
function, one media role is
entertainment. When readers shift from
books and newspapers, they found that
television and radio –in its early years-
can also be a provider of news and
entertainment and thus paved its way to
a new era of media.
But what brought us to this stage of the
media evolution?
 It all started with man’s constant need to
communicate and the presence of
available materials around him. For
instance:
PREHISTORIC AGE:
Petroglyphs (pictographs) are human-
carved illustrations on rock surfaces as
a form of art and communication.
 Cave paintings also known as 
“Parietal Art”; are painted drawings on
cave walls or ceilings. These paintings
are surprisingly identical around the
world with animals as the common
subject and humans appear mainly as
hands –handstencils made by blowing
pigment on a hand held to the wall.
These are the forerunners of the writing
system.

 Body Art just like our Filipino ancestors

Cuneiform script is one of the earliest
schemes of writing, identified by its
wedge-shape mark on clay tablets. It
was in use for three millennia (34 th BCE
to 2nd CE)

performed to communicate with the
perceived deities or gods.

yptian Hieroglyphs is an orderly writing
system used by ancient Egyptians that
combined anagrammed and alphabetic
elements used on stones, wood, and
papyrus, (grammatically derived from
Papyros, ancient Greek for a Cyperus
Papyrus plant.) (3300 BCE-400CE)
Phoenician Alphabet is the oldest
confirmed alphabet, acquired from
Egyptian hieroglyphs; it contains 22
letters, all of which are consonants and
was spread by Phoenician merchants
across the Mediterranean world. The
Greeks borrowed the Phoenician
alphabet and acclimated it to their own
language thus creating the first “true”
alphabet in which vowels are added.
Dry Plates the invention of dry plates by
Richard Leach Maddox in 1871 made
“instantaneous” snapshot practical. The
need for tripod is no longer required and
cameras became hand held and
possible with daylight and fast plate or
film.
Drama is a clear-cut mode of narrative,
commonly fictional, served in a
performance. Western drama comes
from classical Greece and is said to
mirror society. Athens generated (3)
three genres: Tragedy, Comedy and
Satyr-play. These dramas are performed
to communicate to the god Dionysus
during festivities in his honor.

Telegraphy is a long distance broadcast

of textual or symbolic messages.
Invented by Samuel Morse in 1837, it
uses Morse Code alphabets comprised
by dots and dashes or dits and dahs.

INDUSTRIAL ERA:

Printing Press was invented by

Johannes Gutenberg, a German, around
1440 in the Holy Roman Empire. This
works by administering pressure to an
inked surface recessing upon a print
medium such as paper, or cloth) thereby
transferring the ink. The invention and
spread of the printing press is one of the
most important events in the second
millennium.

Phonograph Invented in 1877 by

Thomas Alba Edison, it is a device that
records and reproduces the sound it
previously recorded. In its later form it
was also called a gramophone.
Telephone is a telecommunication
device that allows two or more users to
conduct conversation when they are too
far apart to be heard directly. A
telephone converts sound, typically a
human voice into electronic signals and
are transmitted via cables and other
communication channels to another
telephone.
Film also called a movie, motion picture,
theatrical film or photoplay, is a series of
immobile images that when shown
continuously on a screen, generates the
illusion of moving images.
INFORMATION ERA:
The 20th century saw the birth of what is
conceivably the most well-known device
in the history of mankind: Television.
TV has transformed the delivery of
information, entertainment, and artistic
expression to the public.
Radio uses the technology of radio
waves to convey information such as
sound, by modulating some property of
electro-magnetic energy waves
transferred through space. Early uses of
it was the maritime telegraphic
messages using Morse code.
Television or TV is a medium used for
transmitting sound with moving pictures
in monochrome or in color in two or
three dimensions (3D). It became
popular in the US and Great Britain after
WWII. During the 1950s, TV became
instrumental in influencing public
opinion.
Personal Computers or PC is a
general purpose computer, unlike its
predecessors which are huge in sizes,
(years ago, a few gigabytes would hold
up an entire room). The “personalized”
computer’s size, capabilities, and price
made it accessible and a hit to ordinary
people.

News, information has also become
accessible and retrievable anytime.
gadgets we are using and enjoying today are
actually successors of traditional media.
Case in point is the telephone and the
phonograph, without their conception, you would
not have your android phones in your hands,
you would never enjoy MP3 music on your
phones. Over the years, their development has
made the process accessible, easier and
affordable to all people.
At present, media does not only provide news
and entertainment, it has also become a vehicle
for education.
 Books and magazines provide a more-
detailed look at a wide assortment of
subjects.
 Free online encyclopedia has provided a
lot of help to students during research
and study.
 Websites or vlogs that showcase
simulation of Science experiments

researches
