ABSTRACT
Many farmers resort to manual means of threshing which result into low efficiency, high
level of wastage and exerting of much labour. Different Maize sheller has been in existence
for a long period of time. The Maize shellers have their shortcomings, some of which has
been eliminated by several modifications and improvement on existing ones.
This machine was constructed to shell maize and separate the cob from the grains. It was
constructed from locally available materials and manufacturing techniques such as welding,
turning, drilling, folding e.t.c were used The design, fabrication and testing of the maize
shelling machine was carried out to reduce or eliminate the above mentioned problem.
The machine consists of the hopper, thresher, shelling chamber, grain collection chute, cob
outlet, and power generation and transmission unit. The power is generated by the electric
motor and transmitted to the threshing shaft and the radial fan shaft by the help of a pulley
and belt.
The machine was tested and its efficiency is 99.73% and breakage is very insignificant, as
well as losses.
