EIGHTH SEMESTER B. ARCH

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE & REGIONAL PLANNING

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KHARAGPUR
West Bengal - 721302
INDIA
2020
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND REGIONAL PLANNING

Prof. Joy Sen

Professor and Head
Department of Architecture & Regional Planning

In the year 1952, under the leadership of Professor E. Braner, a group of ten students
formed the nucleus of this Department. Soon it developed into a full-fledged
undergraduate programme also offering post-graduate courses in 1956, for the first
time, in the country. The Institute of Town Planners had also its beginning in this
department. With time, pioneering attempts were made to start advance training in
Building Science, Application of Computer Techniques in Architectural design
Simulation, Presentation Graphics and Construction Technology. The consultancy
activities of the department range from government and large corporate clients in the
country ranging from design of large townships, institutions, landscaped environmental
planning to conservation of heritage sites and buildings.

Some of the key areas of research include Building Technology and Management,
Housing and Community Planning, Heritage Studies and Conservation, Urban Design,
Visual and Graphic Design, Computer Applications in Architecture and Planning, GIS
and Multimedia Applications, Environmental Design, Transportation Planning and Traffic
Engineering, Metropolitan Planning, Infrastructure Planning and Systems Management.

Our B. Arch students are exposed to the challenges of the profession and Industry
through a semester of Office Training. During this semester each student has the
opportunity to get trained under registered architects in various aspects of the
profession and practice, ranging from Office management, Design and detailing, and
Site supervision. Further they also critically appraise a chosen project in all its aspects
and come back to the Department to demonstrate the knowledge and skill acquired,
in the final Departmental Evaluation. The whole process takes into account meticulous
training, office discipline, meticulous detailing and specifications combined with the
human resource management. Further, evaluation by the concerned architect forms a
part of the grading. The success of the Office Training depends heavily on the trainees
themselves, their integrity, sincerity, passion and commitment.

I wish all the students who have prepared themselves for the Office Training all the very
best. I thank the host Architect / Firm for their time and sincere efforts for the cause of
Architecture.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

Professional Training is an integral part of the rigorous architectural curriculum leading

to the B. Arch Degree. The training is intended to impart much needed professional skills
and exposure to the young graduates and to make them exposes and familiar to the
real world outside the Institute; practical world of work gathering, conception, design,
detailing, construction and project management. Over and above these the trainees
are expected to take part in regular meetings and site visit that will enrich their
exposure and are expected to master the office management skills.

Various sections prescribed in the Training Manual have to be viewed seriously and
undertaken with utmost sincerity and dedication for the successful completion of the
Training. Further, It should be noted that the essential training component is intended to
make the trainee exposed to the whole array of professional challenges of the
practical world outside.

During the course of the training, upon joining the Department approved Architectural
firm and sending the joining report in the prescribed format, the trainees shall be
regular in attending the Office and site and works assigned to them. Further they shall
keep a record of attendance duly endorsed by the concerned appropriate authority
of the firm. The students shall be in communication with the Professor in Charge of
Departmental Training and Placement regularly and send regular progress reports,
preferably weekly. Any problem faced by the trainee shall be informed to the Professor
in Charge by writing and with ample evidence. Abstaining from the allotted office or
straying from one office to another is not permitted and will be viewed extremely
serious which will lead to procedural enquiry and award by the Department.

Students shall thoroughly familiarize with the Training Manual and adhere to the
prescriptions and bring documents/sheets/report for the final jury at the department.

Wishing you all the very best,

An exercise in critical observation on an existing project. A student may select any small project and
trace down its development from early concept design. Procedures adopted in decision making at
inception level, series of changes in the process of approvals, constraints such as financial, human and
building bye-law. Changes during execution and changes done by the client after occupation-reason
thereof. User reaction on different aspects, student’s personal remarks based on the faculties of
balanced critical appraisal. The study is to be presented in the form of series of sketches, photographs,
supported by brief analysis and observations etc.

Guidelines:
A. Select an approved firm and any appropriate project already completed by the same firm:

B. Back tracing the design and development: This may be achieved through three levels namely,

Level I:
1. Discussion with the architect- Interview both written and video. Gathering explanation of as to
how and why the initial concept was accepted or rejected. Subsequent development al stages
and problems faced, if any/
2. Professional Payment and submission procedure and steps followed. What were the problems
encountered?
3. Were there any delays caused and reasons?
