Lesson Voices of Verbs

Do verbs have voice? It is just a part of speech. Literally, it does not talk…
What does it mean? Why do we have to understand and learn about voices of
verbs?

Since we know that English is the universal language, it is very necessary to

know the proper usage of the part of speech in a sentence to be well-understood. In
fact, the voices of verbs are very important in focusing the object than that of the one
doing the action.

Do you want to
learn more?
Here it goes…

13
Lesson I The Voices of Verbs

Voice is the property of a verb that shows whether the subject is performing
or the DOER of the action. If the subject performs the action on a receiver, the verb
is ACTIVE; if the subject receives or the RECEIVER of the action, the verb is
PASSIVE.
How to know if the verb is the doer or the receiver of the action?

Let us have this example sentence:

God has blessed the Philippines with rich natural resources.

S V

Let us identify the voice of the verb of the sentence above through these steps:

Step1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

Example : God = subject

Notes from the Teacher

Subject is the focus of the sentence.

This can be a pronoun or a noun.

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

Example: has blessed = Verb

Step 3. Ask this question: Who does the action?

If the subject like in our example in which is the word, GOD does the action,
then the voice in this sentence is in the ACTIVE VOICE.

14
Notice that in the sentence, the word God is the one who has blessed the
Philippines with rich natural resources. Hence, the voice of the verb is in the active
voice.

Step 4. Check whether the subject does not do the action. If the subject does
not do the action then it is in the passive voice.
Example: Life is supported by nature.

In the above, example sentence, the word LIFE which is the subject is not doing
the action SUPPORTED that is why, in this sentence, the verb is in the PASSIVE
VOICE because the word NATURE is the one doing the action SUPPORT to life.

Is it clear now?
Let us do this

together…

Example Sentence
We should develop and conserve our natural resources.

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

_________ = subject

• The subject is the word or pronoun, WE

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

_________ = verb

• The verbs are the words DEVELOP and CONSERVE.

Step 3. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?

• The word or the subject, WE do the action should DEVELOP

AND CONSERVE the natural resources. Hence, the verb of the
sentence is in the ACTIVE VOICE.
Step 4. Check if the subject does not do the action. If the subject does
not do the action, then it is in the passive voice.

• The subject in the example sentence is the pronoun, WE. The

word, WE does the action to develop and conserve the natural
resources. The subject is the one doing the action, thus, the
voice of the verb is not in the passive but in the active voice

15
Do you get it now?

Try to do it yourself
here on the next
activity.

Here, you practice some more…

Sentence: Trees are killed by pollution .

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

_________ = subject

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

_________ = verb
Step 3. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?
Step 4. Check if the subject does not do the action. If the subject does
not do the action, then it is in the passive voice

You are doing great.

Let’s have some

Sentence: All his good works are remembered.

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

_________ = subject

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

_________ = verb

Step 3. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?
Step 4. Check if the subject does not do the action. If the subject does not do the
action, then it is in the passive voice

16
TheLesson 2
Voices of Verbs
The Passive Voice

A verb is in the passive voice, when the subject is the “receiver” of the
action. There are situations when the use of the passive voice helps state and
idea more convincingly, because the more important idea is mentioned first.
A passive voice is used to point out the receiver of an action whenever
the performer is not important or not known.
The verb pattern in a passive voice is the following:

Passive Voice = be verb + past participle

Be verb + past participle

Example: The steam engine was built by James Watt.

Note: Examples of be verbs = is, are, was, were, has, have,

had, and modals with be such as will be, would be,
may be, might be, can be, could be, shall be, should be, etc.

Let’s see how to identify if the voice of the verb in a sentence is in the passive
voice. Here are the easy steps.

Example Sentence
Fruits and vegetables are recommended for healthy diet.

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

Fruits and vegetables = subject

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

Are recommended = verb

Step 3. Check the verb pattern in the sentence. Does it follow the be
verb + past participle?

are recommended = Yes

are = be verb; recommended = past participle

• So, the verb is in passive voice

Step 4. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?

17
Who recommended to eat fruits and vegetables?

The subject, fruits and vegetables cannot answer the

question. There is no word that can answer the question.

• Thus, the verb in the example sentence is in passive voice.

Based on the steps,

is it clear to you now?
How to identify if it is
in the passive voice?
Let us answer the next
activity together.

Let’s do this…

Example Sentence: English is spoken all over the world.

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

English = subject

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

is spoken = verb

Step 3. Check the verb pattern in the sentence. Does it follow the be

verb + past participle?

is spoken = Yes

is = be verb; spoken = past participle

• So, the verb is in passive voice

Step 4. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?
Who spoke English all over the world?

The subject, English cannot answer the

question.

• Thus, the verb in the example sentence is in passive voice.

18
You’re doing
great.

Try to answer
the next activity
by yourself.

Example Sentence: All people are affected by the virus.

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

___________= subject
Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

____________ = verb

Step 3. Check the verb pattern in the sentence. Does it follow the be
verb + past participle?

____________ = Yes or No?

______= be verb; ________= past participle
Step 4. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?

Wow! You did it

well. Keep it up and we
continue learning more
about active and
passive voice in the
next lesson.

Note:
In the passive voice, the receiver is more important than the
doer of the action. Thus, the subject is more important than the one
doing the action.
The verb pattern in a passive voice is following:

Be verb + past participle

Sometimes, the sentence in a passive voice follows the pattern:

Subject (receiver of the action) + be verb + past participle + by + doer

19
Lesson 3
Converting Active to Passive Voice

There are instances that active voice needs to be converted to passive voice
when the receiver is more important than the doer of the action. In other words, the
subject is more important than the one doing the action.

This situation in our English language use happens when we are presenting
a procedure, process or steps. In making reports for experimentations or in
reporting that the receiver is more important than the doer of the action.

So, how do we convert sentences whose verbs are in the active voice to
passive voice?
Are you interested?

Here are the steps:

Step 1. Make the object in the active voice as the subject
of the sentence in the passive voice.

Example Sentence in the Active Voice:

COVID-19 affected many people .

Subject verb object

Note:

How do we know that it is the object? It is the word

in the sentence that receives the action. It answers the question
who receives the action or what/which receives the action if it is
an object, thing, place or animal.

Going back to the example sentence in the active voice,

the phrase, many people, answers the question: Who are affected?
Hence, many people is the object of the sentence. So, to convert it to passive voice,
the phrase, many people becomes the subject of the sentence.

Step 2. Decide the tense of the verb in the active voice.

Affected = past tense

Step 3. Study the new subject, decide for its number. Is it singular or plural?

Many people = plural

20
Step 4. Make the verb of the sentence in the active voice following
the pattern: be verb + past participle.

In the sample sentence, the verb, affected will follow the pattern: be verb
+ past participle. Since, the tense is in the past, the be verb will be were which is
also in the plural form since the subject, many people is plural.
Hence, the verb becomes = were affected, since affected is also in the past
participle form.

Step 5. Check if in the sentence in the active voice there is a doer

of the action. If there is a doer add the preposition by.

Example: COVID-19 affected many people .

What is the doer of the action affected?

Answer = COVID-19

Hence, we will add the preposition by after the

be verb + past participle.

So, it looks like this way now,

Many people were affected by ________.

Step 6. Write the doer of the sentence in the active voice.

In the example, COVID 19 is the doer of the sentence.

So the converted sentence from active to passive voice becomes:

Many people were affected by COVID-19.

Subject + be verb + past participle +by + doer

Have you followed

the steps in
converting active to
passive voice?
Let’s have a
practice together.

21
Example Sentence:

The government gives food assistance.

Step 1. Make the object in the active voice as the subject

of the sentence in the passive voice.

In the example sentence in the active voice, the phrase, food assistance,
answers the question: What does the government give?
Hence, Food assistance is the object of the sentence. So, to convert it to passive
voice, the phrase, Food assistance becomes the subject of the sentence.

Step 2. Decide the tense of the verb in the active voice.

gives = present tense

Step 3. Study the new subject, decide for its number. Is it singular
or plural?

Food assistance = singular

Step 4. Make the verb of the sentence in the active voice following
the pattern: be verb + past participle.

In the sample sentence, the verb, gives will follow the pattern: be verb +
past participle. Since, the tense is in the present, the be verb will be is which is in
singular form since the subject, food assistance is singular.
Hence, the verb becomes = is given, because the past participle of gives is
given.

Step 5. Check if in the sentence in the active voice, there is a doer

of the action. If there is a doer add the preposition by.

Example: The government gives food assistance.

Who is the doer of the action gives?

Answer = The government

Hence, we will add the preposition by after the

be verb + past participle.
So, it looks like this way now,

Food assistance is given by ________.

Step 6. Write the doer of the sentence in the active voice.

In the example, The government is the doer of the sentence.

22
So the converted sentence from active to passive voice becomes:
Food assistance is given by the government.

Subject + be verb + past participle +by + doer

You’re doing well, I know you

get it right now.
Now, do the next activity
by yourself.

Instructions. Change the sentence below to passive voice.

Sentence: Our group danced the ‘Tinikling.”

Step 1. Make the object in the active voice as the subject
of the sentence in the passive voice.

In the example sentence in the active voice, the phrase, ____________, answers
the question: What does the group dance?
Hence, ______________ is the object of the sentence. So, to convert it to passive voice,
the phrase, ___________ becomes the subject of the sentence.

Step 2. Decide the tense of the verb in the active voice.

_________ = ________ tense
Step 3. Study the new subject, decide for its number. Is it singular
or plural?
_____________ = ___________
Step 4. Make the verb of the sentence in the active voice following
the pattern: be verb + past participle.

In the sample sentence, the verb, _______ will follow the pattern: be verb +
past participle. Since, the tense is in the _______, the be verb will be ____ which is
in ________ form since the subject, ______________ is _________.
Hence, the verb becomes = __________, because the past participle of
_________ is ________.

Step 5. Check if in the sentence in the active voice, there is a doer

of the action. If there is a doer add the preposition by.

Who is the doer of the action gives?

Answer = _____________________

Hence, we will add the preposition by after the be verb + past participle.
So, it looks like this way now,
___________________________ by ________.

23
Step 6. Write the doer of the sentence in the active voice.
In the example, ____________ is the doer of the sentence.

So the converted sentence from active to passive voice becomes:

_________________________________.

Subject + be verb + past participle +by + doer

Now, let’s do some more activities about

active and passive voice.

Activity 3

Instructions. Write YES in your activity notebook, if the sentence is in the active
voice and NO if the sentence is in the passive voice.
_____ 1. Magellan’s group was entertained by native dancers.

_____ 4. People of Kalibo, Aklan celebrate Ati-atihan on the third

Sunday of January.
_____ 5. “Ati-atihan” festival was observed by the Atis long before

Now, let us try to see if you get

all correct on page 31, don’t
worry if you still miss some, just
go back to the parts in the “What
Is It “ and Lessons to get the
idea and right answers.

25
In the three lessons from
the previous pages, we have
learned the following:
1. The voices of verbs are very important in
focusing the object than that of the

one doing the action especially in the passive voice.

2. Voice is the property of a verb that shows whether the subject is performing
or the DOER of the action. If the subject performs the action on a receiver, the verb
is ACTIVE; if the subject receives or the RECEIVER of the action, the verb is
PASSIVE.

3. Here are the steps in identifying the voice of the verb in a sentence:

Step 1. Identify the subject of the sentence.

Step 2. Identify the action or the verb.

Step 3. Ask this question. Who does the action in the sentence?

Step 4. Check if the subject does not do the action. If the

subject does not do the action, then it is in
the passive voice.

4. A verb is in the passive voice, when the subject is the “receiver”

of the action.

5. To change sentence in the active voice to passive voice, the

following are the steps:

Step 1. Make the object in the active voice as the subject

of the sentence in the passive voice.

Step 2. Decide the tense of the verb in the active voice.

Step 3. Study the new subject, decide for its number. Is it singular
or plural?

Step 4. Make the verb of the sentence in the active voice

following the pattern: be verb + past participle.

Step 5. Check if in the sentence in the active voice, there is a

doer of the action. If there is a doer add the preposition by.

Step 6. Write the doer of the sentence in the active voice.

26
In the passive voice, the receiver is more important than the doer of the action.
Thus, the subject is more important than the one doing the action.
The verb pattern in a passive voice is following:
Be verb + past participle
Sometimes, the sentence in a passive voice follows the pattern:
Subject (receiver of the action) + be verb + past participle + by + doer
