Health: Health Service Providers challenges you as a learner, to become creative,
resourceful and independent. The scope of the module provides a variety of activities

You, as a growing and developing adolescent that deals with decision-making in health
information, purchase health products, and health services, must learn proper
selection. You must be protected from fraud in order to live a healthy and stress-free
life. This module will help you understand the basics of consumer health providers. It
is a must for you to know how to select health professionals, specialists and health care
services wisely and effectively to be able to attain quality consumer health.
As we face this various health problems, we also decide who can help us solve these
problems. We look for health care professionals and specialist like physicians, nurses
and do a background checking on them if they are credible and experts in their field.
Wise selection of health professionals and specialists is the key for us to avail quality
health care services.

What is It
In the above activity, it shows that every individual, young and old, even though healthy
at the young age have the chance to get sick, look for health services and health
products. You must be knowledgeable of these health care providers, more so be aware
of their types and specialization for you not to be misled by false information and fraud
services.
A. Health Professionals
Health professionals provide essential health care treatment, advice and other services
that promote health, prevent diseases and deliver health care services to individuals,
families and communities based on the primary health care approach.
There are many kinds of health professional or healthcare professional from different field
that may include those who work as a physician, surgeon, physician assistants, nurse,
physiotherapist, dentist, midwife, psychologist, psychiatrist, or pharmacist or who
perform services in allied health professions.
family physicians who care for the whole family, including children, adults, and
the elderly doing routine checkups and screening tests, give you flu and
immunization shots, and manage diabetes and other ongoing medical conditions
hospital internists who is a primary-care doctor who treats both common and
complex illnesses, usually only in adults.

preventive medicine specialists who focuses on keeping you well, while some may
focus on treating people with addictions, illnesses from exposure to drugs,
chemicals, and poisons, and other areas
sleep medicine specialists who diagnose and treat causes behind poor sleeping
habits
sports medicine specialist are doctors who diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries
related to sports and exercises.
general surgeons are doctors who can operate on all parts of your body in which
they can take out tumors, appendices, or gallbladders and repair hernias.
In the above statement, you may call them simply doctors. But most doctors have extra
expertise in one type of medicine or another. In fact, there are several hundred medical
specialties and subspecialties. Here are the most common types of doctors you'll likely
see.
Anesthesiologists -These doctors give you drugs to numb your pain or to put you
to sleep during surgery, childbirth, or other procedures.
Cardiologists- They are experts on heart and blood vessels problems like heart
failure, heart attack, high blood pressure, etc.
Dermatologists- They treat problems of the skin, hair, and nails.
Gastroenterologists – They are specialists in the digestive organs, including the
stomach, bowels, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.
Geriatric Medicine Specialists - These doctors care for the elderly.
Neurologists- These are specialists in the nervous system, which includes the
brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Obstetricians and Gynecologists- Often called OB/GYNs, these doctors focus on
women's health, including pregnancy and childbirth.
Ophthalmologists- They are the eye doctors who diagnose and treat eye diseases
like glaucoma.
Pediatricians- They care for children from birth to young adulthood.
Psychiatrists - These doctors work with people with mental, emotional, or
addictive disorders, and other mental problem.
Pulmonologists - These are lung specialists for problems like lung cancer,
pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, etc.
Urologists - These are surgeons who care for men and women for problems in the
urinary tract, like a leaky bladder.
II. Healthcare
Types of Healthcare
1. Primary Healthcare: main goal is to provide local care to a patient through a normal
generalist, deals with a broad range of psychological, physical and social problems etc.
rather than specialists in any particular disease area.
2. Secondary Healthcare: is provided by the medical specialists and other health
problems who do not have direct contact with a patient like urologists, dermatologists,
cardiologists etc.

3.Tertiary Healthcare: is known as specialized
consultative healthcare usually for inpatients and
on referral from primary and secondary healthcare
for advanced medical investigation and treatment
like plastic surgery, burn treatment, cardiac
surgery, cancer management, neurosurgery,
complex medical, and surgical interventions etc.
1. Understand the Coverage: Be sure to find out which coverage in each plan is standard
and which coverage is optional.
2. Costs of Coverage: Understand the out-of-pocket costs you would have with each plan
you are considering.
3. Consider Medicare: Medicare could be a cost-effective way for you to get the healthcare
you need. Medicare is generally offered to the elderly, but you should check your
eligibility to see if you qualify.
4. Understanding the Health Care Laws: There are laws regarding who must have
insurance coverage and consequences for those who do not get insurance.
