Independent SIL2/3 solution fulfills API 2350

Simply reliable:
Process safety from Endress+Hauser
Requirements The API 2350 specification can be met
by using a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) designed in
accordance with IEC 61511.

As a result of recent incidents, there have been systematic

overhauls to overfill prevention systems. Industry best
practice for managing storage tanks now combines the
existing API 2350 prescriptive standards with the
IEC 61511 functional safety standards.

Complete system independently SIL2/SIL3 certified

The API 2350 standard prescribes methods by which
HMI screen overview
owners and operating personnel can prevent automated
and manual tank overfills.
It requires the use of a risk assessment system. Functional
safety itself can only be applied to complete functional
loops. Claiming a product is SIL capable means only that
the product is suitable for use in a safety function and does
not automatically mean that the complete safety loop is
functionally safe. Therefore, Endress+Hauser has had its
Overfill Prevention System subsystem certified by
independent, globally operating safety inspectors. With
the pre-engineered Overfill Prevention System subsystem
independently SIL2/SIL3-certified, the risk and costs in
engineering and building a complete SIS is significantly
reduced.

Automated proof tests According to IEC 61511 and

API 2350, the safety function of a device must be tested at
appropriate intervals by proof tests. These demonstrate the Oil storage and transportation
functionality of the safety instrumented system in relation
to the safety requirements. The proof test procedure from
Endress+Hauser checks all safety relevant devices such as Improve efficiency and safety:
the level switch, signal horn and flashing beacon with a
single push button. This significantly reduces the effort for • A complete independent SIL2/SIL3-certified
proof tests and brings substantial cost savings during solution provides a high level of confidence in its
commissioning, operation and life cycle management of the reliability
system. For example, proof testing of 16 tanks takes less • The integrated automated proof test procedure

maintenance time
Independent Safety Instrumented System (SIS) In order • A Safety Instrumented System independent from all
to ensure safe functionality and meet the highest safety other gauging and control systems enhances safe
standards, every SIS must be independent of all other functionality
control systems controlling the equipment. All control • Detailed warning and alarm messages support
elements including level devices, controls and alarming the operator in taking immediate decisions and
devices must be dedicated exclusively to the SIS. remedial measures
Endress+Hauser's Overfill Prevention System is completely • Standard interfaces such as EtherNet/IP™ enable
independent of all other process control systems and seamless integration in supervisory systems for
devices. Additionally it is equipped with an uninterruptible remote monitoring, traceability and transparency

Complementing our solutions Endress+Hauser's Overfill Prevention System is used to detect, indicate and prevent
hazardous overflow levels in a storage tank. Required primarily for chemical and petrochemical tanks, it complements our tank
gauging and inventory management solutions.
