Considering the context of the 1950’s, what issues and interests were at stake in the debate over the
Rizal Bill? Do these issues remain pertinent to the present?

-The subject of the novel was opposing the religion of Roman Catholic in the Philippines. Rizal’s novel
according to them was an attack on the church and its main objective was to ruin the reputation of it.
These issues do not remain pertinent to the present because self-identity and self-awareness become an
important aspect of an individual’s life. History in his books does not apply to the present. The youth has
their voices, they could speak for themselves and has the right to choose to whom/what they want to
be, and the failures that limit their skills are often used as an opportunity to become better versions of
themselves.

a. In view of the issues at stake in the passage of RA 1425, is teaching Rizal’s life as hagiography
consistent with the law?

- Consistency is not the problem but the fear of the church of losing their faithful followers because of
the said attacks of Rizal’s works to the church, but Rizal’s works are focus on the abuses of the
colonizers. Rizal was a good man but was fully misunderstood with the contents of his words all he
wanted was for us to realize the cruelness of the colonizers. He must be respected and honored as a
hero that has saved us from the hands of the Spaniards without using weapons instead he used his pen
and paper to fight.
