Objectives:
Solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition of whole numbers
with sums up to 10, 000 including money.

Therese is celebrating her 9th Birthday this coming

December. She plans to invite eight of her classmates to
a sleep-over party. She wants everyone to have the same
things so she has bought 9 pouches for ₱ 290.00, 9 sleeping
masks for ₱ 870.00, and 9 pairs of slippers for ₱ 1, 450.00.
How many items has she prepared?

First we need to know what is being asked and what information

is given. Sometimes, there are some unnecessary information given,
so we need to find out which information is important and which is
not. After understanding the problem, we look for ways to solve it.

In the story above, what is being asked?

The number of items Therese has prepared.

What information is given?

She has bought 9 pouches, 9 sleeping masks, and 9 pairs of slippers.

What information is not needed in this problem?

The amount of items.

How do we solve the problem?

Add 9 pouches, 9 sleeping masks and 9 pairs of slippers.

What is the solution?

9 + 9 + 9 = 27

Therese has prepared 27 items.

Let us use the same word problem to answer the question below as another example.
How much has Therese spent for the things that she has prepared?

We need to add ₱ 290.00, ₱ 870.00, and ₱ 1, 450.00

The solution would be:

₱ 290.00
₱ 870.00
+ ₱ 1, 450.00
₱ 2, 610 .00

Therese has spent ₱ 2, 610 .00 for things that she has prepared.

When we encounter word problems, we must understand the problem first then find out
what is being asked for. We have to use only the information we need and ignore additional
information that is not necessary. Use the information to perform the operation required to
come up with the solution.
