ACTIVITY -1
CASE STUDY
James is on an academic scholarship that requires him to maintain a
certain grade point average. He’s had a rough term and needs to do
well on his finals to pull the grades that will keep him on scholarship.
James is often tense regardless of exam schedules, but when he found
out he would have three finals on the same day, he had a meltdown.
First, he was angry that his schedule turned out this way, and he
complained bitterly about it to anyone who would listen. Then he got
into an argument with his roommate, who was listening to music while
James was trying to study.

The night before his exams, James studied at the library all night. He
skipped breakfast the next morning because he wanted get to the
classroom early. The teacher passed out the test and James began to
read it. He felt absolute panic. All the typing on the page was running
together, his vision was blurred, and he couldn’t remember anything.
The longer he sat there, the worse it got. Finally, he decided to guess on
the questions and get out of the room as fast as he could. He was so
upset that he skipped his next two finals as well. He spent the rest of
the day hiding out in his bed, wondering what he was going to do and
how he was going to tell his mother he flunked out of school.
Discussion Questions

1. Is there anything James could have done to handle this situation

better?

Ans- James was in a situation that every student has to face at

least once in his student life. High stress level and panic is
common among students during exam times. On receiving his
schedule, instead of crying about it to everyone he could, he
should have approached his teacher or his programme leader.
Also he should have taken naps and meals for proper mental and
physical health. He should never take out his anger or frustration
on friends or roommates, instead should talk to elders about his
problem. He could also have adopted easy learning techniques for
stress free and fast learning. All these could have been avoided if
he had managed his time properly.

2. What was the cause of tension between James and his

roommate?

Ans-James was very tensed about his hectic exam schedule. He

was afraid that he wont be able to study well or score enough to
maintain the marks required to continue with the scholarship.
Therefore, under this highly stressful condition james was
irritated by his room mate as he played loud music while James
was trying to study. This created a tension between him and his
room mate .
3. What are some test-taking strategies that would have helped him
do better on the test?

Ans -James should have concentrated on what is important and

what is not . He should have focused on studying and revising
topics which he already knew. This would have helped in
regaining wNjihat he knew. He could have also made notes for
easy reference and understanding.

4. Should James approach his teachers about what happened with

his final exams? What would be the best way for him to do this?

If you were James's professor, how would you handle this

situation?

Ans- James should definitely approach his teacher and tell them
about what happened and what all problems he faced. It would
have been the best way as it would make it easier for him to face
future exams and tests.

If I were his teacher then I would suggest him stress management

techniques and also learning techniques. I would also take care of
student’s schedules in the future so that no other students goes
through what James had to.
ACTIVITY-2
GROUP DISCUSSION

English communication as pride or shame

English is important as a national language, because there is no other

language common to all the Indians. Hindi may be second most spoken
language, but it doesn't apply to all Indians, especially the South of
India. Though this doesn't mean that regional languages should be
ignored.

This group discussion was conducted among eight students, who put
forward their thoughts on this topic in a very polite and subtle way. The
discussion contained both against and in favor points. Also the
discussion helped students to confidently speak in front of a crowd
which helped in improving their speaking skills and enhanced fluency
and vocabulary. Some of the students also came up with real life
examples to make the discussion more understandable.

The session was concluded in an agreement by all students that judging

the students in the basis of whether they can speak english or not
affects everybody negatively and could result in increase in stress and
other mental pressures. Many inputs were also given by the rest of the
class students and our teacher.

ACITIVITY -3
PRESENTAION

EDUCTAION SYSTEM AND STRESS.

Students are one of the most common victims of stress. Factors such as
financial expenses, over commitment, family expectations, deadlines
and workload all induce stress in students. while a mild amount of
stress is very useful and acts as a motivation for students, too much
stress can interfere with their daily lives. When built over time, stress
can give rise to a host of serious problems such as depression and
anxiety.

The presentation also included real life examples of how students or

any entity involved in the educational system faced stress.

For example, suicide of Amity student or murder of Ryan International

School student by another student from the same school.

The presentation also contained points on how to manage stress like:

• Most Important, Stay positive.

• Manage time. Proper time management is one of the most
effective stress-relieving techniques.
• Exercise and get some air.
• Organize your academic life.
• Stop procrastinating.
• Take one step at a time.
• Spend time with friends. Relax.
• Do something you love.

It also discussed how teachers and parents should help students to

manage stess:

• Limit workload
• Listen to their problems
• Healthy diet
• Model self-care

You can determine your PSS score by following these directions:

• First, reverse your scores for questions 4, 5, 7, and 8. On these 4 questions,

change the scores like

this:

0 = 4, 1 = 3, 2 = 2, 3 = 1, 4 = 0.

• Now add up your scores for each item to get a total. My total score is
_2+2+1+3=8__.

• Individual scores on the PSS can range from 0 to 40 with higher scores indicating
higher perceived

stress.

► Scores ranging from 0-13 would be considered low stress.

► Scores ranging from 14-26 would be considered moderate stress.

► Scores ranging from 27-40 would be considered high perceived stress.

The Perceived Stress Scale is interesting and important because your perception
of what is happening

in your life is most important. Consider the idea that two individuals could have
the exact same events

and experiences in their lives for the past month. Depending on their perception,
total score could put

one of those individuals in the low stress category and the total score could
put the second person in

the high stress category.
