4th Day Newsletter

Cursillo Movement of Hamilton Diocese

February 2011

Happy New Year to all of you,

I wish you and your families all the best for 2011 and may the Holy Spirit continue to bring us closer
together in friendship as we commit ourselves to the mission of Christ.

This year we have added a couple of people to our Secretariat: John Kuypers, from Burlington, is our
new Pre-Cursillo Coordinator and Wilma Malick is our new Weekend Coordinator, also from
Burlington. We wish them well in their new assignments and I know they will be a great asset to our
movement in the diocese.

On a sadder note, we must say goodbye to those who have served in the past year on the Secretariat:
Sandi Farwell, Joyce Hause, Patrick Guay, and David Milne. I wish to thank you for your support,
your efforts and especially your commitment to the movement. I will always treasure your leadership
and friendship.

I have sent an invitation to Bishop Crosby to meet with him as the Secretariat this spring. We look
forward to this official meeting to greet him and we welcome his support and guidance.

Our School of Leaders continues with a “Bang”. Sharon Penlington along with her team including
Frank Malick are providing biweekly and monthly sessions in Kitchener and Burlington. We would
like to invite all of you to attend to learn more about Cursillo, grow in faith, and to meet more
Cursillistas who are practicing the method of building friendships. Come to St. Raphael‟s, Burlington
or St. Mark‟s, Kitchener. Watch the newsletter for more dates and topics or check the website:
4thday.ca.

Although we will not be having weekends in the spring, we do ask for your prayers and support as we
discern for the fall weekends. The Rector/Rectora and their teams will also need your support. If you
are invited to be on team, please consider it seriously. It will be a very rewarding experience.

I would like to remind you about making a friend – have you made a new friend this year who may be
considered a potential candidate for the weekend? Try attending a new meeting, a new group, a new
volunteer position in your Church, or just greeting people with your infectious smile!!

De Colores and see you at a school near you,

Kim Jones
Lay Director

School of Leaders

We have had a great deal of support from the folks in Burlington group who gathered at the School of Leaders on January
24th. In Kitchener we have gathered twice – January 14th & 24th, with some smaller numbers. We have had some fruitful
and dynamic discussions.

From the feedback received from all of these sessions and from other forms of information gathering, our Secretariat as
learned that there are very few Cursillistas in our Hamilton Diocese who actually participate in a Group reunion on a regular
basis. The few Cursillistas who do gather and follow the intended tri-pod are truly in the small minority. Others freely admit
that the Ultreya friend they see on a frequent basis is what they use to substitute as a group reunion because that is where
they feel comfortable sharing something of themselves.

The Group Reunion IS the vehicle that is found in no other lay movement! As quoted from the 4th day booklet A Perennial
Cursillo, "Cursillo is not just a weekend thing; it is the fourth day that is the most important. "There is no other movement in
the Church whose method is designed to support its members in their continuing conversion without removing them from
their natural environment." The Group reunion is a key ingredient in the method of Cursillo. The Group Reunions is the tool
with God's Grace that helps us to, on a personal level, go deeper as a Christian. The Group Reunion allows the Cursillista
to continue the conversion process that began on their weekend. It is part think tank, part sounding board, and part listening
ear. Those who chose to commit to freely meeting regularly, by utilizing the tri-pod as their format, share their journeys their
joys and struggles in an authentic way of their lived conversion and they are strengthened and supported by one another as
friends. They personally begin to move outwards, open to friendships with others in their environments. Their joy and zest
for life, if their conversion is genuine, is contagious and draws others toward them by them just being Christian living love in
Action.

Even I have truly come to appreciate just how much I underestimated the potential that the Group Reunion has to really
allow one’s ongoing journey and relationship with Christ to grow. Other forms of group faith gathering groups serve a
purpose but are just not the same as sharing one’s life revolving around the tri-pod.

An ambitious plan of action has been developed for our School of Leaders for this year. We are going to together learn from
a very successful program that has been utilized at another School of Leaders. For February it will serve to help and
encourage us to rekindle and help develop and strengthen more group reunions around our diocese. We will be attempting
to also stay true to the Mallorcan model.

At the St. Raphael’s gathering place, it seems that the Burlington folks just want to meet monthly for now. Many are involved
in other conflicting activities on Mondays. They are an enthusiastic group and are going to squeeze in two Rollos to make
up for time. Their next gathering will be February 21st.

We in the North are going to keep on with every other Friday night at this beautiful facility at St. Mark’s parish unless there
are objections to this. It is a smaller group right now, but hopefully with prayers and some nudging from friends, more will
desire to participate. The next gathering will be February 11th and due to the smaller numbers we have been moved to
another room that is upstairs, fully accessible to everyone – St. Luke's room. After speaking with Father Lee today
(February 3rd) I shared with him that there are smaller numbers in the Kitchener area that have shown interest in the School
of Leaders. At St Marks they have another exciting parish venture that they would like to initiate but were going to hold off
on because we were there. If we do not use it we lose it I shared. When our numbers increase we will get a larger meeting
area.

For those of you in the further north area, like Owen Sound etc., if you can find a location to meet, spring dates can be
planned for your area on Friday nights. We can find places for you to sleep overnight if you consider traveling south in the
meantime.

May the love of Christ continue to keep you warm inside your hearts as we continue to dig deeper.

Sharon Penlington

A Message from the Weekend Co-ordinator

2cor 9:7 Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves
a cheerful giver.

DeColores to all! My name is Wilma. I did my Cursillo in October of 2001 and since then I have been
weekly permanent grouping, monthly Ultreya and going for Spiritual Direction. I LOVE this beautiful
method called Cursillo. I do have the experience of the 3- day weekend as I have work on ten different
weekends so far. My husband and I have spent the last 10 years in Florida. We are Canadians and have
returned to our beloved home country. “Retiring to Canada from Florida”. That‟s something you don‟t
hear often.
I did pray about it before I accepted the position of Weekend Co-ordinator and I thank you for your
confidence in me. I shall do this job to the best of my ability and I pray that it will always be without
sadness or compulsion.

BUT I cannot do it alone. Please pray about this decision: Will YOU be a part of the team? Together,
with God „s help we can do it. The weekend co-ordinating team will need to book the dates and places
for the weekend, keep all the supplies on hand, get supplies to the teams forming, assist the Rector (a)
with whatever concerns there may be, help with the weekend cleanup and preparation for the next
teams and create & keep all the manuals and information up to date…. And more. Lots to do and I do
need your help.

NOTE:
It will take me some time to get “up to speed”, hence the secretariat‟s decision not to have weekends this
spring.
I will make it a priority to get a date and place for the fall weekends.

If being a part of the team is not possible, PLEASE be a partner with your PALANCA.

GOD BLESS, Wilma Malick

Keeping the flame burning

UNDERSTANDING THE WHY OF THE ULTREYA AND GROUP REUNION

Hosted by the Cursillistas of the Vancouver Cursillo Movement
Chilliwack BC
June 23rd – 26th, 2011
Cost $295.00/person

The following is a description of the venue and activities for those who want to attend the
conference as well as make it a holiday.
Sounds wonderful!!!!!
We will offer our participants beautiful rooms, a conference site and Mass space adjoining each
other, a small prayer chapel only steps away and all the accommodations only an elevator ride
away. There is a lovely terrace overlooking a huge koi pond complete with water lilies and a
fountain. The hotel adjoins a city park where people can walk or sit to enjoy the mountain views,
which are visible from every room. There is also a swimming pool adjoining the terrace, which is
available for anyone to use.

Vancouver Cursillistas have committed to billeting anyone who would like to spend a couple of
days in Vancouver, either before or after the conference and also to show them the sights.
Each room has two Queen beds so if people do want to share they can. If people have a spouse
who, while not attending the conference, would like to accompany their husband or wife to
Chilliwack, they can stay in the room free of charge. Chilliwack is in the Fraser Valley about 20
minutes from Abbotsford airport which is serviced by Westjet and Air Canada.

Great vacation spots are within easy accessibility of the hotel – fishing, golfing, etc. The hotel itself
has a lovely dining area where we could have coffee in the down times at our own cost of course.

Never been to a conference before? This would be a great opportunity!

I look forward to being there and sharing this time with some of you.

The Cursillo Movement

INFORMATION FOR SPONSORS
As a sponsor you are responding in a very concrete way to Christ‟s call to spread His good news in our
environments. It is a special blessing to be the instrument in providing someone with the opportunity to
learn that through Christ we can be truly alive. We all know that our weekend was a very moving
experience but perhaps we can also remember the apprehension we felt.

Your candidate will often need a lot of encouragement and support to make what might seem like a
sacrifice. Some information is enclosed for your candidate but there will probably be many more questions
that you may be able to answer. Please be there for your candidate and be open and honest with your
answers. Remember that you can give any information about the weekend but we ask that you not
disclose the letters, Palanca chapel and closing. These were very powerful experiences for you and will
hopefully be the same for your candidate.

There are some things that you should discuss with your candidate. One is the matter of the cost of the
weekend. It is not fair to leave the candidate with the uncertainty of the amount that he/she may be asked
to pay. No one need feel embarrassed to talk about the cost. The major source of funds for the Movement
is the financial contributions of everyone who attends the weekend – team and candidates. These funds
are necessary to cover the cost of the weekend. However, please let your candidate know that no one is
turned away because they are unable to pay. If your candidate needs assistance covering the cost of the
weekend, it is suggested you request assistance from your local Ultreya or the parish your candidate
worships in. Cursillo is a Diocesan Movement and well supported by the Bishop, moreover the candidate
will return to the parish as leaven within the parish community. If you would like to make a contribution
on behalf of your candidate, please tell him/her and put your contribution in an envelope when you bring
your candidate to the weekend.

You are also responsible for doing Palanca for your candidate. This should start before you even approach
him/her about making a Cursillo weekend. It is so important to „talk to God about your candidate before
talking to your candidate about God‟. Although writing a Palanca letter to your candidate is very important
and necessary (this should be left at the registration desk specifically labeled „Candidate name and Palanca
letter – Sponsor‟), please remember that more powerful Palanca is the offering of prayer, fasting and acts
of self-sacrifice. In addition, as part of preparing your candidate, you may wish to invite him/her to join
you at your Group Reunion or Ultreya as Pre-Cursillo preparation.
As a sponsor, you are responsible for getting your candidate to/from the weekend; and are asked to
remain at the facilities with your Candidate until they are settled in. If you are on team then let you
candidate know ahead of time as you will be late in leaving and consider asking a friend to take your
candidate home. It is the team‟s responsibility to clean up after the weekend. You are also responsible for
journeying with your candidate in the weeks and months that follow. Please don‟t leave him/her without
the necessary support of Group Reunion and Ultreya.

Please also remember that the Cursillo is not a cure-all for personal problems. It is your duty as a sponsor
to help to remove any major obstacles and to dispose the candidate for the total message of the weekend.
All candidates must be Catholic and in a position to receive the sacraments or become so or are going
through the RCIA process.
Please keep this sheet for further information.

The Cursillo Movement
Diocese of Hamilton, Ontario
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

A Cursillo Weekend is the focus of a lay movement of Christian Renewal begun by Catholics in Spain in
the 1940‟s. The word Cursillo is Spanish for “short course”. The Cursillo weekend gives us a short course
in Christian living and is the beginning of a new and fuller awareness of what Christianity can mean in our
daily lives at home, at work, with our neighbors, and with other members of our church. During these
three days the Sacraments are stressed; therefore all candidates for a Catholic Cursillo must be Catholic
and in a position to receive the sacraments or become so.

The Church of today needs lay people who can be strong Christian witnesses, thereby bringing about
change in our world. To be effective witnesses, we need to be formed and informed. We can‟t do this on
our own but need the help and support of other Christians.

The weekend program will consist of a number of talks given by both lay people and clergy. You will be at
a table with 4 or 5 others and will have the opportunity to discuss the talks. There will be prayer times and
times for reflection, time to socialize and time to discuss – a truly activity-packed weekend. Cursillo
continues after the weekend by providing each of us with the opportunity to grow in faith and Christian
commitment.

For the weekend you will require casual, comfortable clothing, bath towel, toiletries and any needed
medication. You are also required to bring a sleeping bag and pillow or bedding for a single bed,
whichever you prefer. In order to respect each person‟s quiet time, we ask you not bring a radio or cell
phone. Don‟t worry, if you forget anything or run out, there will be people there to look after your needs.
The cost of providing the weekend could be approximately between $ 180.00 & 220.00 depending on the
facilities we are able to reserve. It will include your accommodation, food, and all materials needed. It
should be noted however, that no one would be refused because of money.
Your sponsor can clarify any of these needs for you.

The Cursillo weekend begins on Thursday evening at 7:30 PM and ends on Sunday sometime between
5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Your sponsor will make sure you are driven to and from the weekend.
In order to provide everyone with the greatest of views and opinions during table discussions, attempts
will be made to put people in groups with different ages, occupations, and life situations.
Therefore, we ask for some personal information, which will be used for the administration of the
weekend. All forms will then be destroyed.
If you have ANY questions, please contact your sponsor.

CURSILLO MOVEMENT
DIOCESE OF HAMILTON
INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL TEAM MEMBERS
WANT TO BE ON TEAM???
The Secretariat is compiling a list of Cursillistas who are interested, qualified and available
to be on team.
There is no guarantee that by completing this questionnaire that you will be chosen to
serve on a team, but your request will be given serious consideration.
Team Selection Criteria:
 It is preferable that you have been practicing the Cursillo method of Group Reunion
and/or Ultreya, and attending School of Leaders and other events put on by
Secretariat. It is very difficult to witness to and/or be an example of the method of
the Cursillo movement if you are not “Walking the Talk”.
 If you are involved in other church movements, please be prepared to set these
aside during Cursillo weekends, so that the team and all candidates can fully
experience the Cursillo movement as a whole.
 As this is a Catholic movement, only practicing Roman Catholics are eligible for
teams.
Team Selection Considerations:
 A balance between those who have been on team and new Cursillistas is considered
very important.
 An attempt is made to see that the same people are not continually on team. New
Cursillistas help provide new ideas and inject vitality into the movement.
Personal Considerations:
 Anyone who is in crisis should give themselves time to deal with their struggles and
time to heal before serving on team.
Team Commitments:
 Be willing to attend all or most of the preparatory team meetings so no messages are
missed and so that proper bonding of the team takes place before the weekend.
 Must participate in the full 3 days, including Thursday night.
 You are expected to help the new Cursillistas become integrated into the Cursillo
community by encouraging them to go to Ultreya and by helping them to join
and/or start a group reunion possibly with them if necessary for awhile.
 A payment will be requested towards the expenses of the weekend. The amount will
be confirmed by your Rector/Rectora.
Team meetings are crucial to building team community but, on a weekend, a team
member’s role is one of self-sacrifice and service to the candidates. In a small way,
you will follow the example of Jesus Christ when He washed the feet of His
disciples.
If you are interested in serving on an upcoming Cursillo team, then take a moment
to fill out the information and forward to the weekend co-coordinator.
