CAMPOS, MACARIO JR. M.

1. In desert regions that are too hot in the daytime and too cold during the night time, the walls of the
houses are made of mud. Why is it important?
Answer: As we all know in the desert region we can feel too hot because of lack of tress and limited
season of rainfall. The wall of their houses was made of mud because this kind of material is consist of
organic element and salt, which can be used as heat insulation.
2. What feels colder on the same temperature? A tile floor or a wooden floor?
Answer: For me I will choose the tile floor, since we all know that all materials conduct heat in different
levels. In heat conduction there are two possibility: first is good conductor of heat and second is bad
conductor of heat. So in this case, the best example of a good conductor of heat is the tile floor in which
it feels colder than the wooden floor.
3. You can hold your fingers beside the candle flame without harm but not above the flame. Why?
Answer: We can hold our fingers beside the candle flame without harm because the air between is a
good insulator since this process of heat transfer is conduction wherein those liquid and gases are poor
conductors. But if we are going to touch above the flame our fingers will be able to burn because of the
convection of hot gasses in the flame.
4. How does the heat from the Sun reach out on Earth?
Answer: The heat from the Sun reach out on Earth through the process of Radiation wherein the heat
from sun passes through space and then through atmosphere before it will reflects to the earth’s
surface.
5. In the old days, on a cold winter night it was common to bring a hot object to bed with you. Which would
better to keep you warm through the cold night- a 10kg iron brick or a 10kg jug of hot water at the same
temperature?
Answer: In this case we can now apply the Laws of Thermodynamics, situation wherein systems
cease/stop exchanging energy in the form of heat because they have the same temperature already the
thermal equilibrium. The thermal energy is always moving no matter how what substance is heated.
Those substances of similar temperature will exchange heat more slowly. So in this situation, the water
holds heat for longer periods than metal. Water has a high heat capacity- it absorbs a lot of heat before
it begins to get hot, meaning it takes more energy to increase the temperature of water compared to
metal. Metal has a much lower heat capacity than water.
