ASSESSMENT: (How you will determine that student has mastered objectives?

):

Each student in the class must give at least one example of a long a and short a vowel. Students will be

conversational with the words, and out of the 20 words on the See Saw iPad app activity students must get at

least 17 words correct.

SELF-ASSESSMENT/REFLECTION: (Complete this section if you have taught this lesson to peers or in

clinical placement):

I received some very good information after this lesson from my advisor at St. Francis. Essential questions need
to get to the core of the content and ask what is the big connection of the ideas? Why are we learning what
we’re learning, and why is it important in a child’s educational journey? What is a vowel and why are we
learning what vowels are? How are they used to read? Objectives need to be clearly stated by saying “students
will be able to…” and they’ll learn ABC “in order to…”. This gives a clear purpose and measurable goals for
the lesson are a must.

Kids should be engaged in the lesson, and positive behaviors should be reinforced and praised. Kids can raise
their hand, give a thumbs up, or stand up to show comprehension. Also, explicit modeling is a must for a lesson
like this. I need to demonstrate the activity on the board before starting the see-saw activity. Any visual or
tactile additions to the presentation will only reinforce the ideas we’re trying to teach. Next time also use photo
cards that show an apple for “a”, an elephant for “e” and so forth. Also possibly review the words in the see saw
activity before having the kids start to avoid any confusion.
