SMALL PLANE CRASH IN PACOIMA

Statement in response to the Plane Crash in Pacoima

LOS ANGELES, CA - Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez released a statement regarding the Plane
Crash in Pacoima calling for the closure and redevelopment of the Whiteman Airport to bring much
needed housing, jobs, and economic opportunities to the region.

Today, a small plane crashed near a home while approaching Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, killing the
pilot. Firefighters extinguished the flames consuming at least two vehicles, navigated downed power
lines and prevented the home from sustaining any structural fire damage. The Department of Water
and Power (DWP) assisted with shutting down power to the area due to the electrical hazard from
downed power lines.

“My condolences to the family of the pilot killed in today’s crash in Pacoima. The loss of any life is
tragic, and I am thankful no one else was harmed by today’s crash, but this community has sustained
injury by Whiteman Airport’s operation for decades. Today’s accident is a reminder of the public safety
threat that Whiteman Airport has long posed to the community of Pacoima; a community that derives
no value from it’s operation, but is subject to all the negative impacts. As the County evaluates efforts
to invest resources with greater equity, I’m calling for the closure and redevelopment of the Whiteman
Airport to bring much needed housing, jobs, and economic opportunities to the region,” said
Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez. “Economic and environmental injustice permeate every facet of life
here, amplified by the number of COVID-19 cases and long lines at the food pantries. It’s past due to
deliver substantial economic investment and environmental justice.”
