3
Facet - Harmonics

Input Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is a major

concern with MV Drives.
 High THD can overheat switchgear
 High THD reduces system efficiency
 High THD can impact adjacent equipment via noise or overheating.
 High THD can weaken the power distribution system.
 IEEE519 specifies a maximum acceptable THD of 5%
 High THD has a detrimental effect on other system which results in early
failure or excessive maintenance costs

4
Facet - Harmonics

Most contemporary MV Drives use Multi-pulse Diode

Rectifiers.
 Diode rectifiers draw current in discontinuous segments.

6-pulse – Input THD Typically 40% 12-pulse – Input THD 9-14%

Some MV drives use an Active Front End (AFE) rectifier

And so on: Additional Filtering is Required and Reduces Efficiency

18 pulse Typically 5-5.5%

24 Pulse Typically 3.8%

36 Pulse Typically <3%

Current source AFE Voltage source AFE

Active Front End (AFE) input THD 4-5%

5
Facet - Harmonics

■ MV1000 – Yaskawa Smart Harmonics™ Technology

 Yaskawa’s patented method of producing a high quality input waveform
drastically reduces THD to a nominal 2.26% without adding extra equipment
 This technology uses a Yaskawa transformer design to achieve the
performance greater than a 36 pulse design.

8
Facet - Power Waveform
■ All VFDs “construct” a power waveform from the DC bus
 A more sinusoidal waveform is better
 Less motor heating
 Less stress on motor insulation
 Less stress on cabling
 Less need for filtering
 More efficient
 Lower Harmonic losses in the motor

■ There are 2 design configurations used today

 Current Source Inverter (CSI)
 Old technology
 Low performance, heavy filtering required
 Slow dynamic response
 Voltage Source Inverter (VSI)
 Most recent technology with multiple types
 Output waveform quality defined by “levels”

9
Facet - Power Waveform

■ VSI power waveforms - Types

 3 level output
 Sine wave filter required for use with existing motors
 dV/dt filter required for cable length >300ft
 Reflected wave peak voltage near 9kV
 5 level output
 Modest improvement to 3 level
 dV/dt filter required for cable length >1000ft
 Cascaded H Bridge
 Number of levels depends
on configuration of output
power ‘cells’
 With 2 level cells, 3 cells per
phase results in 7 level
waveform as shown

10
Facet - Power Waveform

Cascaded H Bridge - Enhanced – Yaskawa’s MV1000

 MV1000 uses multiple 5 voltage step bridges.
 Requires only 2 bridges per phase at 4160V.

15
Facet - Performance / Quality

■ Quality
 High MTBF is a hallmark of Yaskawa products
 MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is a statistical measure of product quality.
 Yaskawa’s VFD MTBF leads the industry.
 Each generation of Yaskawa drives builds on the past with increased MTBF.
 The engineering design estimate for the MV1000 MTBF is >200,000 hours.
 Actual field data of MV1S, First Generation, results in an MTBF of >400,000 hours!

16
Examples of designed Performance / Quality

■ Capacitor Life
■ Exclusive use of Nippon Chemicon
■Voltage margin and low temperature
rise give long life
■Nippon Chemicon application guide
states:
MV1000 capacitor design philosophy uses a 105°C rating
with a 20°C rise above ambient @ full load determined by
thermocouple internal to capacitor (installed by
manufacturer). This would give a 60°C internal
temperature at 40°C max ambient. Capacitors are rated
105°C.

Capacitor nominal voltage rating 1050VDC

Operating voltage (no load) 850VDC
Operating voltage (full load) 775VDC
Drive OV trip level 1050VDC
Capacitor surge rating 1200VDC

Maximum capacitor life is obtained by

running 105C design at 60C with lifetime
experience by users in excess of 20 years.

17
Examples of designed Performance / Quality

Circuit Board Design

■ Consumer quality design philosophy
■Hardened for industrial application
1. Capable of survival for 1000PPM
H2S exposure 30 days (actually
tested)
2. 200,000 hour design life at max
ambient and FLA
3. Reliable connectors
4. Fiber optic isolation to the power
cells

18
Facet – Performance / Quality

■ Transformer Design
■ Yaskawa specification
■ No exposed conductors
■ 60kV BIL vs 30kV industry standard
■ Lightning arrestors
■ Double creepage distances vs
industry standards

19
Facet – Performance / Efficiency

What does a drive add to motor cost to run

annually?

Drives have losses that occur converting power from AC to DC and back to AC.

Conversion efficiencies vary. For example 2000HP:

Company Y is 97% = $19,725

Company T is 96.5% = $23,012

Company S is 96% = $26,300

Difference $6,575 annually (Using 5 cents/kwh)

20
Facet – Maintenance
■ MV1000 Power Cell is a complete unit.
 Input fuses
 Input rectifier
 DC bus capacitors
 Cell Control Board (CCB)
 Output bridge and gate drivers.
■Designed to Minimize MTTR, Maximize Durability, Increase Uptime
■MTTR of a MV1000 Power Cell Failure is 15 minutes
 Failed Cell is Removed, New Cell is installed –Done

■Overall maintenance:
 Clean door air filters regularly
 Change real time clock battery every 5 years
 After 10 years, possibly change the fans (depending on usage)
 No need to change capacitors or IGBT’s during designed lifetime of VFD (22.5 years @ FLA and 40 C)
